When Sergio rang the end-of-treatment bell at CHLA in 2021, his family hoped they'd never return. But in 2024, Sergio’s cancer came back—and then, the unimaginable: his younger brother Andy was diagnosed with the same rare brain tumor, called germinoma.

Experts in the Brain Tumor Center ensured the boys received the highly specialized care they needed to heal while Sergio and Andy supported one another through scans, radiation, chemo, and hospital stays. And this summer, they celebrated a huge milestone: ringing the bell together in a joint end-of-treatment ceremony. 💛

17-year-old Noah got the news that nobody wants to hear—he had leukemia and needed a bone marrow transplant. Noah's mom Olivia started documenting their journey together for her social media, capturing their time in isolation where they weren't able to have visitors due to infection concerns.

But Noah's riding friends and family didn't let that stop them from visiting and bringing Noah joy from afar. And thanks to the comprehensive care he received from the CHLA Cancer and Blood Institute’s Dr. Thomas Hofstra and Dr. Babak Moghimi, Noah was able to move forward with a blood donor transplant from a special donor, his mom, and he's now cancer-free! 2025-08-19 20:52:33 17-year-old Noah got .. 1,713 -15% 84 +91%
☀️ Summer fun starts with safety! Before your kids dive in, make sure you know these essential pool safety tips.

1️⃣ Remember the ABCs:
A = Adult supervision at all times
B = Barriers such as gates, locks and alarms
C = Classes, including swim lessons for kids and CPR training for adults

2️⃣ Choose life jackets approved by the U.S. Coast Guard to ensure proper protection.

3️⃣ Assign a “Water Watcher” whose only responsibility is to keep eyes on the pool with no distractions and no alcohol.

3-year-old Isabel Danhakl has a rare form of eye cancer called retinoblastoma. It typically affects children younger than 5 and, even after successfully undergoing chemotherapy, patients never officially go into remission and are monitored well into adulthood.

Unlike most cancers, retinoblastoma can’t be biopsied since taking a sample could cause the cancer cells to spread. But there was hope—a new test pioneered by CHLA's Dr. Jesse Berry called liquid biopsy where, using a tiny drop of fluid from the eye, clinicians can know definitively whether a child has retinoblastoma. There was just one problem: Until the liquid biopsy was validated in a certified lab, it could not be used clinically.

That’s when Isabel’s parents, Victoria and Thomas, stepped in to help. With a generous gift from the Danhakl Family Foundation, of which they are both trustees, Dr. Berry’s lab was able to collaborate with CHLA’s Center for Personalized Medicine in late 2022. This led to the creation of a validated clinical test and new platform called LBSeq4Kids, which sequences DNA using a pea-size amount of aqueous humor and guides treatment for children with retinoblastoma.

Back to school means back to sports. For kids like Dexter, adaptive sports are more than just a game. 🏀

Dexter was born with microcephaly, which delayed his motor skills and speech. But when he found wheelchair basketball through CHLA’s Jackie and Gene Autry Orthopedic Center and AngelCitySports, everything changed. “He really owns it out there. He’s got this swagger,” says his mom. “You can see his confidence grow with every shot.”

Angel City Sports provides year-round adaptive sports programs to help individuals with ability differences build strength, confidence, and community. With support from providers like Dr. Kay and programs like these, children discover their strengths and feel truly included.

“Events like this remind us that ability comes in many forms,” says Dr. Kay. “When kids see what they can do—not what they can’t—it changes everything.”

Meet Kacey, a 9-year-old Bernese Mountain Dog with a heart (and tongue!) too big to contain 🐾

Kacey is a seasoned pro in our Dog Therapy Program. In addition to being a loving snuggle machine, she also trained her younger sisters Winnie and Ruby, who now serve alongside her. Her favorite place to visit? The Emergency Department—even if the beds are tiny and barely fit her!

Her most distinctive feature is her ridiculously long tongue. Since puppyhood, it has slipped out of her mouth while sleeping, running, swimming, or anything else. While it can fit inside, it rarely does. 🐶

Not all keto diets are the same.

At CHLA’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, Clinical Dietitian Katie Klier, RD, explains how the medical ketogenic diet—a science-backed, doctor-supervised treatment—can help reduce seizures in conjunction with medicine.

Unlike the popular keto diet for weight loss, medical keto is carefully customized for kids with epilepsy and monitored by a team of specialists. Katie breaks down what makes this diet different and why it’s such an effective tool for seizure control.

Cole and his family traveled from out of state to receive expert care at CHLA’s Cancer and Blood Disease Institute. Cole’s father, a firefighter himself, stopped by the local fire station and asked if the crew might visit Cole in the hospital.

Without hesitation, Los Angeles Fire Department Station 35 extended their ladder truck up to Cole’s hospital window with a big “Get Well Soon” sign. They later visited his room to deliver a goody bag and some encouragement.

“It meant the world to Cole,” his dad shared.

Thank you to the LAFD Station 35 crew for going above and beyond to lift the spirits of one of our brave young patients. 💙

During mom Erin’s 20-week ultrasound in July of 2024, doctors uncovered a rare, but devastating, congenital heart defect: Transposition of the Great Arteries. Erin then transferred her and Wynn’s care to CHLA’s Fetal-Maternal Center and Fetal Cardiology Program. Shortly after he was born, CHLA's heart surgeons reconstructed Wynn's tiny heart by hand.

One year after that terrifying discovery, Wynn is a smiley, vocal, and energetic 8-month-old. “We can’t believe it—he almost seems like a different baby,” says Erin. “You look at him now and you’d never know he started his life in such a serious way.”

Happy 1st birthday to twins Olivia and Lainey! 🥳

When they were born, they were conjoined at the lower abdomen, sharing intestines, and classified as monochorionic diamniotic, or mono-di—meaning they had the same placenta but separate amniotic sacs. Conjoined twins are rare enough; mono-di conjoined twins are a near impossibility.

The expertise of CHLA’s fetal-maternal specialists and pediatric surgeons helped to diagnose and separate them, and a year later, they are healthy and thriving.

It’s getting hotter, and that means windows are opening. But are they safe for kids? 🪟☀️

Every summer, CHLA sees a rise in emergency room visits due to children falling from windows.

Screens aren’t safety devices. As Helen Arbogast, CHLA’s Injury Prevention Manager, explains: they’re made to keep bugs out—not children in.

✅ Keep furniture away from windows
✅ Use window guards or locks
✅ Always supervise when windows are open

A few small changes can prevent a life-changing fall. Share this with someone who needs to hear it.

Diagnosed right after birth with a rare form of liver disease, 2-week-old Banner needed a transplant to save his life—though according to all available records, a liver transplant on a neonate had never been performed in California.

Banner was immediately put on waitlist for a new liver, and an organ from an adult donor was quickly found. In comes CHLA’s Dr. Kambiz Etesami, MD FACS, who had the tough task of cutting down the organ to the perfect size to work for 7-pound Banner.

After driving down to San Diego to retrieve the liver himself, Dr. Etesami and his team took Banner back for surgery, emerging 16 hours later with the youngest recipient of a liver transplant in California since data on pediatric liver transplants began to be collected in 1988.

3 months later, Banner was finally given the green light to return home after his new liver and other organs showed huge improvement.

“There are very few places that would undertake this kind of transplant and even fewer that would do it successfully,” says Dr. Etesami.

Today, he’s living out his dream as a quarterback for the University of Michigan and the epitome of a cancer survivor.
