Japan’s fashion scene isn’t quite what it used to be. These days, everything in the world seems to be blending into one giant smoothie of copy-paste sameness…

I’ll admit, there was a time I gave up dressing up altogether… fashion fatigue is real.

But there’s comfort in knowing that a few creators here still refuse to be swallowed by global trends. They’re the splash of paint in a grey-scale fashion world. 🎨

And if you’d like to cheer on that playful rebellion, pop into scolar_official & scolar_harajuku. Their quirky, unexpected street style will have your wardrobe grinning from ear to ear. 2025-10-03 16:43:59 Japan’.. 0 -100% 103 -27%
【The retro Enoden】

You may have heard of The Enoden (江ノ電, short for Enoshima Electric Railway), a small but super-famous private railway that made its appearances on famous anime and manga.

Here’s how you can make the most of your trip to Enoshima+Kamakura!

🎫: purchase your ENOSHIMA-KAMAKURA FREEPASS (digital tickets available!) and enjoy round trip travel on the Odakyu Line, plus unlimited ride on the Enoden!

The one day pass departing from Shinjuku Station costs only ¥1640 for adult and ¥430 for children. Super worth it!🥹

I’d recommend that you first visit Kamakura, and end your trip at Enoshima so you can return to Shinjuku from Katase-Enoshima Station, and enjoy the luxury of a Romancecar ride for just an additional ¥750!

Recommended spot:
🎋Houkoku-ji Temple for the stunning bamboo grove (Kamakura)
💶Zeniarai Benzaiten Shrine—wash your money to multiply fortune! (Kamakura)
🍡Mushinan—a kominka cafe next to a rail crossing (Kamakura)
🐟Shirasuya—hidden local eatery serving ocean-fresh shirasu (Enoshima)
🚇Enoden Monaka Ogiya—a retro sweet shop featuring an old Enoden train (Enoshima)
⛩️ Enoshima Shrine—Island’s guardian shrine. Don’t forget to climb the lighthouse!

【The Hakone you didn’t know】

To be honest I haven’t been back to Hakone for years because I felt that it has become too mainstream…

But I was so wrong! This time, I used the Hakone Freepass by Odakyu and discovered some of the most amazing, still unexplored spots of Hakone. 🥹🥹

🎫: Hakone Freepass
Save money with unlimited travel on 8 different forms of transportation, bringing you seamlessly from Shinjuku Station to your favorite spots around Hakone. Digital tickets are available so no more losing your paper tickets! (Like I do all the time 🥹)

🏨: I stayed at the amazing Hakone Hatsuhana located at Hakone-Yumoto. All rooms come with a private onsen♨️, perfect for those who value privacy and need some top-notch relaxation.

🥩: For lunch, I recommend Gyunabe Ukon, where you can savor delicious Wagyu hotpot by the riverside.

🍵: My best discovery this time was Amasakechaya, a tea house that served daimyo, samurai and travelers as a resting stop on the old Tokaido route since the Edo period. The owner is so, so lovely I promised him I’d be back again. 🥹

I can’t list all of the details in one short post, so I have compiled a detailed blog post on how to purchase the Hakone Freepass as well as some of details of these beautiful spots still undiscovered by many. odakyu_global

【Still Tokyo: Kozushima Island】

Welcome to the wildest part of Tokyo you never knew existed: the 11 treasure islands.

Kozushima is my 6th, and I spent 4 days soaking up slow island life: volcano hikes, star-filled skies, crystal-clear waters, and a legend that gave it its sacred name—“the island where gods gather.”

Highlights:
🏔️ Mt. Tenjo – hike to the top for panoramic island views
🏊‍♀️ Akasaki Promenade – snorkel, swim, or dive in a natural ocean pool
🌌 Star Sanctuary – one of Japan’s best night skies, no filter needed

Japan’s caution toward outsiders isn’t about shutting people out. It’s about protecting something so fragile yet so precious that’s built by decades, centuries, even millennia of good ethics and good will.

A system like this lives only because everyone honors the same unspoken kindness. Once broken, the chain of trust unravels.

Let’s take our time to understand this, and do our part to honor such a beautiful society where a coin and conscience is enough to buy your breakfast.

Let’s pray that a system like 「無人販売」 (unmanned stalls) can exist forever in Japan. 🙏🏻 2025-09-23 09:20:26 .. 33,818 +965% 788 +455%

【Super Deep Japan Series】

Prefecture: Ibaraki 茨城県
Town: Daigo 大子町

Kicking off a new series where I dive into Japan’s deepest hidden gems—and this time, I found myself in Daigo Town, tucked away in the mountainous Okukuji (奥久慈) region at the northern tip of Ibaraki.

Here’s a taste of what makes it special:

💧 Fukuroda Falls (袋田の滝) — counted among Japan’s three great waterfalls, together with Nikko’s Kegon Falls and Wakayama’s Nachi Falls.

📺 A retro townscape with a fresh twist—stylish cafés and subtle art tucked among old streets. Think cozy spots like daigo_cafe_net with pure nostalgia, or cafe_restaurant_framboise for surprisingly delish pasta.

🎣 Ayu fishing in summer — I tried the traditional tomo-tsuri (友釣り) method, where a live decoy ayu lures wild ayu into the hook. It’s way trickier than it sounds… but yes, I actually caught one!

⛩️ Local shrines with a twist — like Ayu Shrine and Konnyaku Shrine, celebrating the town’s beloved specialties.

🍎 Specialties to try: Daigo apples, Okukuji shamo (prized free-range chicken), Okukuji tea, and fresh wasabi.

🚗 Access: About 3 hours by train, but driving wins—only 2h15 from Tokyo.

It kind of breaks my heart to see how fashion has blended into sameness on a global level, with everyone looking more or less alike these days.

15 years ago, I was a proud Heisei gyaru, and Harajuku/Shibuya were my ultimate fashion paradise. 🥹

Harajuku, especially Takeshita-doori, feels worlds apart from what it once was. So many one-of-a-kind stores have disappeared, replaced by what you see in this video. It makes me sad… but I guess that’s also Harajuku—always reinventing itself.

If you’re a true treasure hunter, watch till the end to discover scolar_official, a Japanese brand that’s been unapologetically refusing to fade into the shadow of the masses since 1999. 🥹

Do you believe in things you can’t see with your eyes?

10 years ago, I wouldn’t have understood what a “soul” is. But just like wifi and ultrasound, just because we can’t see or hear them doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

I believe there are places in this world that align with who you are, places that mirror what you truly desire.

For me, that place is Japan, even though the soul must have chosen to be born somewhere else, I like to think it was so I could arrive here and see Japan in a brand new light.

Where is your spiritual home?

Most travelers skip ski resorts in summer, but that’s exactly when we love them most—quiet slopes, crisp air, and all the little off-season perks. 🌿❄️

Happo-One (did you know that it is pronounced hah-poh-oh-neh, not happo-wan m? 😬) is one of Japan’s most beloved ski resorts.

But what happens when the snow melts? On a summer night, under a glowing full moon 🌕, we climbed the green slopes for a star-gazing adventure.

Sometimes that’s enough: just you, your thoughts, and the endless sky stretching far beyond.

Our yearly secret summer retreat 🥹🍃.
Quiet, serene, very very cool! (literally.)

Last year, we spent a couple of days up on the alps at Tsugaike Nature Park and enjoyed possibly the coolest weather in the brutal months of July and August.

This year we came back again, and all 3 of us hiked all the way up to the summit of 2010m!! I’m proud of everyone!

The average weather here is about 20°C and you can even see snow covered alps and leftover snow in the wind cave. 😳

Trust me, you will want to bring a light jacket for early morning hikes and breezy evenings.

To make things super convenient, we stayed over at unplan_village_hakuba that’s located just right next to the gondola. If you are thinking of some ski-in-ski-out winter fun, save this for your year end holidays!! 😏

Comment “TSUGAIKE” if you wanna know how autumn and winter looks like at tsugaike_kogen, and I’ll send you reels I’ve posted in the past!

Shimosuwa is full of Edo-period charm!

After making a music box last summer at suwanone.nidec, this time I visited Shimosuwa Konjakukan Oideya, a local tourism hub and museum, where I tried my hand at assembling my own clock! 🕰️ The clock museum has a deep connection to timekeeping, featuring fascinating exhibits from the Edo period, including an incense clock—a unique way to tell time!

For the night, I stayed at Maruya, a charming inn with a rich history dating back to the Edo period, now lovingly looked after by its 13th-generation owner. Dinner was an intimate affair, served right in my room, and the next morning, I enjoyed a hearty breakfast by the irori (sunken hearth)—a warm and cozy way to start the day!

For lunch, you can visit Tocoro Terrace and Shinshu Sanroku Cafe Terrace, where I got to enjoy local ingredients, including kanten (agar), a regional specialty. After my hands-on kanten-making experience in Chino, it was fun to taste it prepared in different ways!

Weaving and fishing—get crafty and outdoorsy in Okaya City! 🎣✨

First stop: Okaya Kinu Kobo “Okaya Silk Studio”, where I got to weave my own 100% pure silk coaster for just 1,000 yen! 🧵

Choosing the colors and working the loom was oddly therapeutic—highly recommend if you want to feel like an old-school artisan. If you’re planning a longer stay, you can even dye your own silk threads to weave a silk stole for a more personalized touch!

Then, off to Lakehood Cafe for a mini boat ride into the middle of Lake Suwa for wakasagi fishing. 🐟❄️ The best part? You can fry your own wakasagi tempura on the spot! Crispy, golden, and straight from the lake—can’t get any fresher than that.

Hopefully, this is enough to get you hooked on this amazing city in the Suwa region—a hidden gem still unknown to many!

Remember my summer trip to the Suwa region in Nagano? I was there in winter too to experience its winter charm! ❄️✨

In this reel, I covered three areas in the Suwa region:

① Chino City
Chino is one of the best places to experience rural Japan, where centuries-old traditions are still preserved. Last time, I had so much fun cooking with the locals, and this time, we witnessed how kanten (寒天, agar) is made using a traditional method that has been passed down for over 200 years! visit_chino

② Fujimi Town
fujimipanorama was stunning last summer, and this time, I returned for snowboarding! 🏂 If you’re a beginner, check out the gentle slopes marked with a 🐢 sign for an easy start! 😆

③ Hara Village
We stayed at Mominoki-so, a lovely resort where you can reserve your own private onsen! ♨️ If you’re into astronomy, don’t miss the Yatsugatake Shizen Bunkaen where you can stargaze outdoors and explore space-related activities and goods.
