There are some AMAZING capabilities with AI (particularly in medicine), but until there are regulations I’m extremely skeptical. Watching people take medical advice from AI slop doctors with no accountability is scary. Add to that the fact that people are facing massive cost of living increases due to tariffs, the gutting of existing sources of energy and an uncertain job market… this is scary to me as a business owner. The FDA obviously needs to make sure brands are testing properly, but if you’re allowing powder sunscreens which are … not my favorite (see video I made in 2020)… maybe allowing foam as a dosage method is a good use of resources? Also we are dealing with a sunscreen crisis (people in the U.S. thinking it’s toxic) so, perhaps, if we want people wearing sunscreen… we should make it wearable (and safe). The FDA two weeks ago sent warning letters to brands like Supergoop! and Vacation warning them that foams are not an approved dosage form. Never in the warning later did they say the product wasn’t safe, what they did note was you can’t say a mousse or foam is a sunscreen. Which, fair! Maybe it should be revised. Making matters worse, the FDA also issued an inflammatory tweet which then created headlines that the FDA was saying mousse sunscreen doesn’t work. Not true. Ah, to live in the internet age. Was very lucky to speak to Jean from one of my favorite sunscreen brands EVYTechnology 🧡 which is the second brand pictured (not available for sale in the U.S.). He explained not only how testing methods work for mousse (he knows a lot about how they work) but how Evy tests their sunscreens and why it’s not hard to test mousse sunscreens for the required 2mg/cm2. As long as if you’re applying a lot (brands should state how much you should be using as the dosage is adding air into the formula), you’re good to go! Posted this last week on TikTok, been asked enough to post here. A reminder that scope of work is critical. It’s confusing because every state is different, what I can tell you is… ✔️ no esthetician’s license will grant you access to a peel that can create that level of damage. Estheticians in the U.S. are allowed to work in the stratum corneum. If you have a medical advisor, rules change. Ie I get microneedling at a dermatology office by an esthetician. IF it wasn’t at the derm office? Microneedling not allowed. This has changed over the years but low pH peels can go into deeper layers of the skin— many states are clear, you can only do ‘superficial peels.’ Some go so far as limiting pH. And let’s be real those peels are FANTASTIC. They don’t lead to disfiguring burns. ✔️ if your skin is burned to any degree GO TO A DOCTOR. ✔️ if anyone hurts your skin and charges you tens of thousands of dollar for the solution, ask a lot of questions. ✔️ laws vary by state, along with hours and training (and then some states have master esthetician training). That being said, it’s not a medical license. Again, it’s limiting what you can do! Everyone has their lane. Have a much longer list but I know so many incredible estheticians who do amazing things for people’s skin so this is not a reflection on the industry. Skincare isn’t complicated — the marketing is. And everyone’s routine and tolerance is different. A hydrating essence and a hydrating serum are usually different due to the texture, many contain the same ingredients. You don’t ‘need’ both, you can pick one. Very intrigued with skinrocks next launch by the carolinehirons because it looks like it’s solving an issue that I’ve seen (and giving some clarity as to when you apply certain products). If you’re skin is irritated, red, blotchy or you keep getting periorial dermatitis flares… step alway from the 8 separate hydrating & barrier repair serums, essences and toners. And please, stop ‘skin flooding.’ Am going to work on a substack here because people don’t realize you can over do it! sofiepavitt’s been talking about this a lot along with derms seeing this in their practice and—there is such a thing as too many barrier repair products. Going to work on a larger substack because it’s wild how people feel they need more skincare when sometimes less is more. If you’re confused—the best thing to do is KEEP IT SIMPLE. Also, unless if you’re dehydrated, drinking oil drums worth of water isn’t doing anything for your skin 🙂‍↔️ You’re reminder that you CAN over do it on gentle products. For one, you’re layering 12 different formulas and preservative systems on your face, and also, having perpetually wet skin can lead to barrier impairment. Damp skin is more permeable, you want that for some treatments, not for the entirety of your day! Can’t stress this enough—simple will always be the most safe (and affordable) way to care for your skin (along with sunscreen). If you like doing the same step over and over again, do you. For me, why would I use a hydrating serum when rhode glazing milk does the same thing with a better texture? Or violette_fr boum boum milk? I don’t use them in the same routine, but I do use them to hydrate my skin before my moisturizer. No I don’t use them before serums because they’re too rich. Skincare IS confusing because companies have created so many categories. I’m 38 and too old to fall for another mediocre marketing story that is divorced from history and reality. If you like an oil high in oleic acid great but it’s not a miracle. Just because something is ancient, doesn’t make it wise. While there are worse things you can put on your face, the addition of essential oils I’m assuming is to temporarily mask the smell, but can be quite irritating. Reviewing a beef tallow brand that sent me their skincare and wanted to deep dive into what beef tallow actually is and why I’d love for brands to drop the commentary around ancient purity (that European ‘wisdom’ was anything but pure). People sell pure squalane! You can sell beef tallow, as long as we are being real on what it does and the limitations. Also no shade to the actors on Chief of War but like, whoever is doing hair and makeup is sending a MESSAGE about the Europeans.
