Back to baby life with Emilia 💕 Emilia James Albert arrived March 30th, coming into the world calmly and on her own terms. She’s a dream baby so far and her big sister is in love. Thankful for wonderful French maternity care, three days in the hospital to bond and recover, and the laboring tub that looked like a giant Veuve champagne bucket (see 2nd photo). I was shocked this birthday weekend happened — I was convinced we would be in lockdown — but I’m so happy it did. France is technically out of lockdown today, now under a nightly curfew instead. Still, there are no holiday parties and we will be skipping our usual Christmas spirit activities in an effort to stay safe. A lot of people are feeling especially isolated. Thankful for the ability to spend 10 more years in France 🇫🇷 Picked up my 10-year titre de séjour this morning. Because of the pandemic, the process took nearly a year, but now I don’t have to step inside the prefecture for a decade. It’s not the Thanksgiving morning I hoped I’d have, and I ache to be with my family and share my baby daughter with them during the holidays. But it does make France feel a little more like home and gives me something extra to be thankful for today. Does early motherhood get easier? Since going back to work I feel pulled in all directions, not quite giving 100% anywhere. Stepping out of confinement to buy some groceries and take the bébé for a stroll. 🥬🥦 Some of you have written to ask why France is back in confinement and how I’m doing. The short answer is that virus cases and deaths spiked back up to levels we saw in the spring. French hospitals are overcapacity again, so the government felt it had no choice in order to save lives. Everyone moved indoors to socialize with the colder weather and the situation got bad again fast. I was really upset at first, mostly because I’ll spend Thanksgiving in lockdown instead of with my family, and it seems they will never meet my baby. But I’m tolerating this alright now. I will still go to work (press is considered “essential”) and for the moment Bianca’s crèche is open. I’m taking comfort in the fact that Bianca is none the wiser and if anything enjoys having papa around more. I’ll try to keep things as normal as possible for her until this all passes. For me it is a lost family holiday and inconveniences — a small price to pay to keep people safe. For many others it is a bigger price, but unfortunately we got to the point where it was needed again. “When having a baby doesn’t mean potentially losing your job or spending all your savings, pregnancy isn’t as daunting of a decision.” As an American, pregnancy and childbirth in France has opened my eyes to just how little support mothers in the U.S. get. It makes me sad and furious that my fellow American women don’t have the same right to the financial and physical safety I was allowed. Paid maternity leave and affordable childcare should not be a luxury. The rest of the industrialized world knows that — why not the U.S.? The bébé officially started at crèche (the French nursery system) today.
