Can’t believe I almost skipped the Basilica Cistern on my second to last day in Istanbul — some blogs said it wasn’t worth it (??), but wow… they could not have been more wrong. This underground space was built in the 6th century by Emperor Justinian I to supply water to the Great Palace — and it is unreal. Over 300 marble columns, moody lights, eerie stillness… it honestly felt like I stepped into another world. The craziest part? It was hidden for centuries and only rediscovered in the 1500s — and now it’s been reimagined with walkways, lights, and even soundscapes so we can experience the magic up close.
