THE ROOFLESS GT1

The Panoz Esperante GTR-1 was a pretty good race car whose days were cut a bit short because its competition in GT1 from 1998 has very little to do with road cars (GT-One, 911 GT1-98, CLK LM) and 1999 would be more of the same with the CLR and Panoz couldn't cut it anymore with their front-engine car against a crowd of mid-engined closed-cockpit prototypes.

So they changed categories to LMP to battle the V12 LMR and the R8 instead. This is how the LMP-1 Roadster S was born.

Not much was changed apart from chopping off the roof and changing the rear (wing included), even some of the GTR-1 chassis were converted to LMP-1s and several new others were made. The front remained mostly the same, just narrower headlights and a wider nose and larger bulkhead. The Ford Élan 6L V8 was kept as well and LMP01 Evo that came later is merely an aerodynamic package improvement thus the LMP1 chassis can be easily switched back and forth between an LMP-1 Roadster S and an LMP01 Evo.

We fortunately now have chassis 008 racing in Peter Auto enduranceracinglegends events around Europe, more recently seen at Paul Ricard and it's one of the newly-built LMP-1s (so not converted) for the 2002 ALMS season, debuting late at Laguna Seca in a striking US flag-inspired livery, even finishing 5th at Le Mans the following year and earning four 3rd places and a 2nd place at its last race at Petit Le Mans, all in 2003. 2025-09-23 21:38:57 THE ROOFLESS GT1 The Pa.. 267 -60% 10 +4%
DER RINGMEISTER

Alright, back to newer cars for a change. I didn't get to post the M3 GTR from FOS yet given other priorities but now I do! This is the 2004 Nürburgring 24h winner, from a time when real DTM cars and former ALMS cars could go head to head around the Green Hell. Three years after being outlawed from the ALMS given regulations changes requiring manufacturers to build 100 homologation units and 1000 vehicles of their range to have the base engine that the race car uses, the M3 GTR continued racing in Europe.

Pedro Lamy, Dirk Müller, Jörg Müller and Hans-Joachim Stuck drove the M3 (I think it's chassis 003) to victory after 143 laps and tough competition from Porsche and the factory-entered Abt-Audi TT-R DTM race cars. 2025-09-21 21:17:33 DER RINGMEISTER Alri.. 177 -73% 1 -90%
ART CARS AT REVIVAL

The Earls Motor Show always has a variety of cars that don't necessarily match the timeframe of the Revival, in order to keep the feeling of the motor show of the future. This year the main protagonists were five BMW Art Cars that stopped by at Chichester as part of their world tour, with Jeff Koons' M3 E92 GT2 getting a special colored stand to match its explosive livery.

The colored lines drawn across the bodywork represent speed and intensity, which make sense as the car raced at Le Mans in 2010. Jeff even drove an M1 to get a feeling of how race cars behave.

Besides that, we also got:
- 3.0 CSL (Frank Stella): clean and calculated black straight and circular lines over a thin gridded paper-like livery to mimic technical drawings
- 320i Group 5 (Roy Liechtenstein): Motifs taken from period magazines, comic books and newspapers and showing his iconic pop art pointillism
- 635CSi (Ernst Fuchs): Fiery flames engulfing the car in a dramatic way
- 850CSi (David Hockney): He depicted the car as being transparent with the driver and a Dachshund painted on the driver's side with the front looking as if a zipper is wide open. 2025-09-20 21:13:42 ART CARS AT REVIVAL The .. 596 -10% 5 -48%
JIM CLARK'S LIGHTWEIGHT SPECIAL

The Revival has celebrated Jim Clark, one of the greatest racing drivers in history, with a parade made up of (mostly) race cars driven by him plus a flock of sheep (he was born into a farming family). He held the record for most wins (25), poles (33) and fastest laps (28) in Formula 1 at the time of his death, aged 32.

He did a lot of sports car racing as well, with cars including (or spearheaded if you ask me) this Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato, chassis 0182/R, entered by the Essex Eacing Team at Le Mans and various long distance and sprint races across the UK, France and Germany.

While John Ogier's team was not the factory representative per se, it did receive plenty of factory backing and top drivers as well like Roy Salvadori and Innes Ireland next to the Scotsman. Ironically, he did not race this car around the Goodwood Motor Circuit, Roy Salvadori (3rd, 1961) and Graham Warner (7th, DNF, 1962) did, instead Clark being behind its wheel at the 1000km Paris (9th, 1961) and Silverstone International GT race (4th, 1962).

Moment-wise, the sheep running between the cars take the cake but car-wise, this was my pick from the Jim Clark parade. 2025-09-19 21:30:53 JIM CLARK'S LIGHTWEIGHT S.. 99 -85% 1 -90%
SPIDER ALLA SCAGLIONE

I think it was quite obvious I would talk about this one as well. The fun story about it is that this Giulietta Spider Bertone was covered on Saturday morning while the 2000 Sportiva was not (being a coupé it won't rain inside it) and after it got uncovered I forgot it was covered that same morning!

This was Franco Scaglione's attempt at the Giulietta Spider that the US importer Max Hoffman requested for the North American market. Pinin Farina's design did win eventually, giving us an eternal symbol of beauty and simplicity, but even if Bertone were to win, they did not have the capacity to produce it on top of the ongoing work on the Giulietta Sprint (work of Scaglione as well).

Chassis 0002 shown here is the actual design proposal, as chassis 0004 came one year later with slight changes (lopresto.official has that one). The tilted, curved nose and rear fins from the B.A.T. series are seen here as well and, while a well proportioned two-seat roadster, it was deemed too radical for the American market, ironic knowing they were going through a jet age at that time with cars having tail fins twice as large.

pundchristophe owns this one and he also sold the 2000 Sportiva to its current owner! Definitely a pleasant surprise to see it and him at the Revival. 2025-09-18 21:30:49 SPIDER ALLA SCAGLIONE I.. 182 -73% 7 -27%
SCAGLIONE'S GT MASTERPIECE

The Alfa Romeo celebrations held at the goodwoodrevival blew everyone's expectations out of the water with over 30 cars joining the parade and others being on static display during the weekend. One of the latter ones is this sublime 2000 Sportiva coupé which derived from a racing 50s berlinetta sadly lost to time.

The 1900 S Berlinetta was supposed to compete against the Ferrari 250 MM and 375 MM in Mille Miglia and other similar events but the available documentation is extremely scarce and most points to the car being eventually destroyed.

The 2000 Sportiva shared the underlying mechanicals with those two 1900 Sport models but this was instead a more road-worthy GT available for private racing teams to compete with against the likes of the 300 SL.

The low roof-like curved hood shows up again, its tall beltline and muscular rear fender flares give it road presence and impresssion of power and the rear lights inside twinned tail fins are extremely similar to those on the Giulietta Sprint and Giulietta Sprint Spider Bertone 0004 (the one in the lopresto.official collection).

Only two exist because all resources were reallocated to the Giulietta Sprint project, leaving us with only this red chassis 0004 in private hands and the silver 0003 usually displayed at the museoalfaromeo. 2025-09-17 21:20:51 SCAGLIONE'S GT MASTERPIE.. 229 -66% 13 +35%
A FEATHERWEIGHT CHAMPION

Zagato had quite agreat presence at lemansclassic this years with a stand featuring two Alpine race cars together with an agtztwintail and others, and one of these race cars, the A210 chassis 1725, proved to have a very impressive track record.

A triple Le Mans 24h participant plus other appearances at Nürburgring, Kyalami and Reims, winning its class at Le Mans in 1967 and 1968 plus at the 9 Hours of Kyalami ane 12 Hours of Reims, both in 1967 as well. On top of that it won the Index of Performance at Le Mans 1968, a very sought-after prize back in the days by entrants that didn't have the power or financial backing of the big competitors.

This car was actually offered from during the Le Mans centenary race by rmsothebys so I did see it back then and despite not selling then, it did end up in the collection of alpinelab being purchased from ascottcollection.

SUPER GT AT SILVERSTONE!

GT3 cars are no strangers to Super GT as they have been used officially since the early 2010s (with GT cars being used since the very late 90s) when teams started importing them, but now more and more GT3 cars hit the market as they are now allowed in historic racing, including several GT300 race cars that are making their way out of Japan!

Last month at silverstonefestival there were three GT300s in the stacked gt3legends grid, this being an Ex-Hitotsuyama Racing R8 LMS chassis 13 0502, a Z4 GT3 chassis 1012, the 2015 Super Taikyu championship winner and an Ex-Dijon RacingNISMO GT-R GT3 chassis 4A02 built in 2013 and raced in both GT300 and Super Taikyu!

ALLARD'S SUCCESSOR

What do the Allard J2X-C and Spice AK93 have in common? The bubble cockpit, the double stacked rear wing and the desire to be competitive in GTP.

Our story begins in 1990. By that point Spice was a revered Group C2 and IMSA Lights race car manufacturer with many class victories in cars powered by a plethora of different engines but that didn't mean they were financially stable. The European wing was heavily affected by the new 3.5L engine regulations as these required a rebuild after each race. All in all, Spice was sold to Costas Los in 1991, the man behind the Allard revival project. He and his team were working on the Allard J2X-C Group C car (available for sale at ascottcollection by the way) wgich was supposed to be powered by a Honda V10 engine used in Formula 1 (Honda RA109E or RA100E), clmpliant with the new regulations, but the Jaoanese went to Champ Car Series instead after seeing that the Group C days were numbered.

In that case, the J2X-C was powered by the 3.5L Cosworth DFR mated to a Leyton March F1-derived gearbox. Another problem with the project is that there were no customer teams for the car. All in all, the Allard only went to the 1993 Le Mans test where it was heavily penalised top speed-wise due to its very downforce-aggressive loadout, and raced at Laguna Seca in IMSA GTP, finishing 9th.

With the J2X-C project put on indefinite hold, work on a Spice SE92 GTP race car fielded by David Tennyson's team together with Spice USA continued with a new 6.5L Chevy V8 mated to a Hewland gearbox plus a new bodywork which debuted in 1993. Here the bubble cockpit and double wing of the Allard were used plus reinforcements to the to the car's sides (now named AK93) to remove the door entry replacing it with a side window entry!

The AK93 fared really well that year with four 3rd places and a 4th place but only finished 8th in the championship for missing five rounds.

The AK93 is nowadays driven by Michiel Campagne and Allard Kalff in historic Group C racing, their latest appearance being at the silverstonefestival!

RED 5 AT LE MANS

This is something I found out only after going through some pictures from silverstonefestival. Nigel Mansell raced at Le Mans just once, but was a very special occasion as he did that with his two sons Leo and Greg in a car carrying the legendary Red 5!

Sadly, the Zytek 09S chassis 04 LMP1 lasted less than 30 minutes on track due to a puncture going into Indianapolis that sent Nigel into the outer barrier with a concussion. He got checked and recovered swiftly.

Chassis 04 was used in 2008 at Petit Le Mans by Team LNT, then in 2009 at the Le Mans Series by Strakka Racing and in 2010 by Beechdean Mansell by the father-sons trio up to Le Mans and by the sons only after that at Hungaroring and Silverstone 1000km, finishing 7th OA both times.

SINGLE OWNER, THE BRAND OWNER

How great must feel to buy an unique car straight from the brand's founder and enter it at Villa d'Este a few years later? The current owner of the Serenissima Agena must feel great after this!

Serenissima started as a customer racing team to Ferrari, Maserati, Abarth and Porsche under the helm of Count Giovanni Volpi de Misurata in 1958 that expanded into the car manufacturing sector in 1963 so they would start building their own race cars. Volpi was an important customer to Enzo Ferrari until he bought a stake in ATS, manufacturer founded by the engineers Enzo fired months before. Serenissima Automobili appeared after that and the Agena was the first of four models they made.

This one followed the revolutionary (at that time) mid-engined layout on road cars, shortly after the Lamborghini Miura shocked the world with its transverse V12. The Serenissima had a V8 instead designed by Alberto Massimino that found its way in the 308V Jet Competizione Spyder that raced in 1966 at Le Mans.

The body was coachbuilt by Fantuzzi and originally it was planned to feature louvred headlights instead of the covered double sphericals used now.

The Agena never hit production (no Serenissima model did anyways) and was kept by the Count himself in his property in Venice until 2019 when was Artcurial's responsibility to sell it at Rétromobile. It went into German ownership and was entered at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este last year where I saw it!

It is a complete car, obviously, but it does look a bit like a mix of several model parts put together although that's more from a design inspiration standpoint. It reminds me of the De Tomaso Mangusta and even Ford GT40. It does fit well with the American-powered mid-engined sports cars despite being a fully Italian sports car. 2025-09-03 22:30:10 SINGLE OWNER, THE BRAND .. 391 -41% 4 -59%
IDENTIFYING THE FURAI CHASSIS

We all know how the Furai has ended but apparently I didn't know that a Courage C65 chassis was used as the base for making the concept race car!

Now the question is which one of them. From what I found, there are around 15 of them, all under the C60 denomination (C65 LMP2 race cars still used the same chassis as the C60 LMP1 cars) and while some of them are known where they are (mostly in Europe used in historic racing or for sale), some have tgeur current whereabouts uncertain but this still reduces the number of suspects by a significant amount.

The C65 pictured below is just to show the car, that C65 currently exists, dkengineering has it for sale.

Stay tuned for more details into this investigation.

SUPERFAST SUPERFINS

There are some incredible European cars in the States. Max Hoffman's work combined with the post-WWII optimism and buying power among US citizens allowed them to import or even commission exotic Lancias, Alfa Romeos and Ferraris.

The 410 Superamerica Superfast Pinin Farina is no exception. Large rear fins are a design cue mostly associated with Carrozzeria Ghia (check the Ghia Gilda, Chrysler Superdart Ghia and the Ferrari 410 Superamerica Ghia) thanks to Giovanni Savonuzzi's work that attracted the attention of Virgil Exner, but that's not an exclusive attribute of it.

Chassis 0483SA is one of four unique 410s to be rebodied with more American styling (Ghia did another one and Boano did both a coupé and a roadster) and was fitted an unique 4.9L Lampredi racing V12. The car stands out by its large rear fins, half-covered rear wheels and triangular taillights and was the star of the 1956 Paris Motor Show where it debuted.

William Doheny bought it shortly after the exhibition and has exchanged hands in the US multiple times up to the present day, only once leaving the American continent for Peter Agg's UK collection in 1980. Today is part of the Lee Collection in the US and has recently won the Public Award at Salon Privé, very well deserved!

Also, I am extremely glad to have seen it as this is one of those US cars on my bucket list that I can finally tick off! 2025-08-31 21:22:26 SUPERFAST SUPERFINS Th.. 996 +50% 25 +159%

TESTING THE GIULIA

Alfa Romeo has taken its time to prepare the ultimate evolution of the Giulia on the track after the campaign of the Giulietta in all its sporty trims and Bruno Bonini and Guido Moroni, former Alfa Romeo works driver and Alfa Romeo test driver respectively, gave details 30 years ago on the testing done to the Giulia TZ:

The testing days were long, often lasting over 12 hours, time in which Moroni and whoever was co-pilot would only eat a sandwich and return at night to avoid curious people and paparazzi, some days covering even 1000km through the Futa and Stelvio passes and even going as far as Veneto.

After these long sessions the mechanics would dismount the chassis and engine to modify areas the test drivers said needed a change and they would alternate between chassis and engine modifications. Also, much of the testing on track was done at Monza, specifically the banked section as it would test the car's top speed, stability and suspension.

That's where they found out the chassis was quite weak to strong centrifugal forces and the suspension would flatten out because of that as well. Also the initial testing of the disc brakes was dangerous as they would fail quite often due to overheating. They replaced the aging drum brakes later but it took a while because Alfa Romeo was generally reluctant to change, same thing happening with the mid-mounted engine. Their excuse for the disc brakes was to avoid a discrepancy between the race division using disc brakes and the road cars using drum brakes, as if little technology made its way on road cars from race cars.

Chassis 750064 was supposed to be one of the 31 Stradales but it was put in racing spec from the factory and delivered in Paris. It successfully took part in races and hillclimbs between 1965 and 1968. 2025-08-28 21:49:45 TESTING THE GIULIA Alfa .. 240 -64% 3 -69%
THE ELECTRIC LE MANS RACER*

Well, at least that was the original plan. The 2012 Garage 56 entry was taken by the DeltaWing backed by Don Panoz and Nissan, featuring a very sleek open-top prototype that almost looked like a three-wheeler.

Two years later, Nissan wanted to revisit this one-off race car but this time turn it into the first fully-electric Le Mans race car. The problem was that the battery technology back then (and even today) was very far from offering an electric race car real chances of doing anything meaningful at the French classic. The most that the team theorized would be possible was to run the first 11 laps of a stint with petrol power and the last one with electric power as the car was at its lightest point (little fuel left).

RML was responsible to build the car and the engine, a turbocharged 3-pot capable of 400bhp weighing only 40kg. Adess AG built the chassis. The Nissan ZEOD RC (Zero Emission On Demand) had a very rough run: unrealistic expectations, tight deadlines, new unproven parts and technology, Panoz accusing Nissan of stealing the design of the car, a disappointing demo at Fuji, but it ended up on the grid for the 2014 24h of Le Mans.

It did set a quali lap under 4 minutes as required to make the grid at 3:50.18, comparable to GTEs but its race lasted only 24 minutes due to the gearbox giving up. It would have been faster with an upgraded battery pack that never came due to it being stuck at customs.

Chassis RC-002 shot here was the test and development chassis and went to Le Mans as well but in pieces to have spares for the car on the track. This one was seen at Silverstone Festival last weekend.

Sam's in the pits has an extensive video on YouTube covering the car plus Super GT and DTM, two series that are sparsely talked about on the platform and I definitely recommend his channel! 2025-08-27 21:30:58 THE ELECTRIC LE MANS RACE.. 461 -31% 15 +56%
