Swaying dances, blaring music, and colorful costumes filled Mexico City’s Zócalo during the Mega Calenda Oaxaca 2025 last Sunday.

visiting this animal market (tianguis ganadero) felt like being transported to a completely different world. The vibe was raw and full of life. Here, you’ll find live animals like goats, chickens, pigs and more. All from local farmers.

“¡Corre, corre, corre!” shouted the Tlacololeros as they walked around and ropes whipping through the air.

By the end of the ritual, my feet were covered in scratches. That’s what happens when you stand too close to Pelea de Tigres.
Still, it was such a memorable experience. It’s even become an inside joke between me and my friends ever since.

If you ever find yourself in Chilapa de Álvarez, Guerrero, don’t miss this little spot near Super! The lady there sells guisado tacos, and you may choose your own fillings, which are all homemade, including the tortillas. Fresh, warm, and absolutely delicious!

⚠️ If you’re not into spicy food, skip the huevos jitomatos.
I love spicy food, but I swear this one is on another level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🫨

The residents pray in front of the altar as a part of Atsatsilistli ritual. The chant, spoken in Nahuatl, brings a peaceful and solemn atmosphere.

Nahuatl is Aztec’s indigenous language, and it’s still alive today. Some people here still continue to use it in their daily lives.

When I was there, one participant taught me a few numbers in Nahuatl. It sounds really different to Spanish.
1 = Se-Sentelt
2 = Ome
3 = Ye-Ye

Tlacololeros dance

The dancers donned wooden masks, sack tops, and wide-brimmed hats with ribbons and whips. This traditional dance portrays farmers defending their land from pests and drought.

Atsatsilistli was the highlight of my trip.

I went to the hill where the ritual took place. After the prayers, the Tlacololeros dance was performed, followed by Pelea de Tigre (Mexican tiger fighting), all of it done to ask for rain.

What fascinated me most about Pelea de Tigre was that the more blood fighters shed, the greater the sacrifice made to Tlaloc, the rain god.

I finally arrived at Acatlán. I got off the camion and found myself at the town square. This place was already packed with people. The first day of ritual just began with the traditional dance performance. At the same time, the fighters headed to the church for a blessing before fighting. And outside the church, everyone flocked to watch the battle.

I was exhausted and ended the day by chewing some tostadas, quesadillas and churros.

What a ride!!!!

Getting there from Mexico City took almost eight hours, with a few stops, no signal and suddenly being stopped by several people. I asked myself “what exactly am I doing?”
Overall, it was the best trip I’ve ever had.

Some views from the bus, and the last one is during my ride from Chilapa to Acatlán by camion.

Six hours journey

Bus is by far my favorite way to get around Mexico. It’s cheap, which means it’s for me. Although I had to transfer from one bus to another, which could be exhausting..but honestly, it was fun too. 🚌

2-3
Next destination was #grutastolantongo #Hidalgo We headed to the terminal and bought a ticket to Ixmiquilpan.

4-5
It took almost three hours to get there. And from there, we hopped on the local bus to reach Mercado Morelos.

6-10
Then we walked through the market to a parking lot “San Antonio,” where the micro bus to Tolantongo departs.
The microbus had a set schedule, and I had to wait for hours for the next one. A few taxis were lined up outside the lot. I briefly considered splurging on them. I asked for the rate and…okay, I told myself, the microbus is the right one. ☝🏼

Eventually, it came and we got on. The route was intense, twisty roads through mountains, but thankfully, I felt fine. No nausea. 🤐

11
Once we arrived, we headed straight to the counter to book a room. Most were already taken, but we got lucky with last room for four people.

In total, the journey took about six hours. But I swear, it was every minute.

15-16
We stayed for two nights.
The first day, we spent exploring the Grutas. The second day was all about relaxing in the thermal pools.

Real del Monte diaries
The strangest souvenir I’ve ever had 🪨

2-3
After exploring #mineraldelchico we headed to #mineraldelmonte and spent a night in a camper van and it was such a cool experience!!! 🚐

4-5
The next morning, before going to Centro, we visited the Museo de Sitio Mina de Acosta, an old silver mine. It was about a 15-minute drive or a 30-minute walk from where we were staying.

“Should I call a taxi?” Asked Addi.
“Nah, let’s walk. It’ll be fun,”I said.

Plot twist: it was not fun for my legs. 😅😅

6–9
Once we arrived, a guide took us through the depths of the mine and shared some amazing stories. At the end, he handed me a souvenir—a stone from inside the mine! It’s definitely the strangest thing I’ve collected. I packed it in my backpack and felt like a geologist returning from an expedition! 👷🏻‍♀️🥾

By the end of the visit, we were exhausted and starving. We then went to Centro. This time, we chose comfort over adventure. 🚕
