- On this bright and sunny Saturday/Caturday in Brooklyn, I wanted to extend a “caloroso benvenuto” and hard-launch my new roommate, Enzo (full name: Enzo Karl Furrari-Parsons), who officially moved in yesterday evening on Good Friday. More than three years have passed since my beloved Louis left us on a Friday night in September 2021, and since then so many good-intentioned friends and virtual strangers would ask when I was going to adopt another cat. I was never ready to go through this again, for so many reasons. That loss wrecked me and a certain level of sadness lingers still. This quote from the TED LASSO program is something I turn over on my head often: “I like to think grief is the price we pay for truly loving someone. And it’s worth every penny.” Three Saturdays ago while scrolling through distillerycats a photo of a 1-year-old cat named Karl caught my attention, as did the urgency in his need for a new foster home. The next day I filled out an application and started the two-week process to adopt him. He was named Karl by the two German journalists who found this striking and loving cat abandoned on the streets of Kensington, Brooklyn, and rescued him. While Karl (with a K) was on my short-list of Future Cat Names, I wanted an Italian name and so Enzo he is, joining the ranks of other great Enzos like Enzo Ferrari and Italian director, screenwriter, and actor Enzo G. Castellari who served as the inspiration for Brad Pitt’s Italian actor disguise/pseudonym “Enzo Gorlomi” in INGLORIOUS BASTERDS. My Enzo lives up to all the promise described in his adoption profile and so much more. This new responsibility and adventure is keeping me on my toes. I feel like a late-in-life new father chasing around a 1-year-old, but he’s adjusting well to his new home and I love having him here with me, and look forward to our life together. My thanks to brooklynanimalaction for all of their help, especially Donna for guiding me through the process, Misty for being such a great foster to Karl and sending him off with his favorite one-eyed felt mouse, and Mila, who joined Donna for last night’s special delivery. “Life is an adventure.” —Steve Zissou

- ********************************** UPDATE • Wednesday, April 2 (SOLD OUT) • Thursday, April 3 (SOLD OUT) *********************************** As part of the year-long celebration of the 110th anniversary of Caffé Dante (dantenewyorkcity)—the landmark MacDougal Street cafe—I’m excited to announce that I’ll be hosting an upcoming class on “Demystifying Amaro” at Accademia Dante, the exclusive event space next door to Caffé Dante. In this intimate experience—limited to 12 guests—you’ll have courtside seats at the stylish bar for an engaging and entertaining talk and tasting as I dive into the background and history of amaro, key botanicals and production methods, as well as a guided tasting through various styles of these dynamic, Italian-born, bittersweet liqueurs. In addition to the amari tasting, we’ll begin with a welcome spritz and end the evening with the Cynar-kissed modern classic cocktail, the Little Italy, along with tasty aperitivo snacks from Caffé Dante. And there just might be a few special “suitcase bottle” pours from my personal amari collection. I’ll also have copies of my books BITTERS and AMARO available for purchase and to have signed. • Wednesday, April 2, 2025 (5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.) — SOLD OUT • Thursday, April 3, 2025 (5:30 p.m - 7:30 p.m.) —SECOND DATE ADDED! • Acacdemia Dante (85 MacDougal Street, New York, New York 10012) • Event includes 2 drinks, a tasting selection of amari, delicious snacks, and an exclusive Dante goodie bag. • $125.00 (plus tax)
