It was four years ago this evening on a Friday night when my beloved Louis let me know he was ready to say goodbye. I held him tight and walked him around our apartment to see all of his favorite things one last time then rushed him to the emergency room. The doctor offered a prognosis but I knew he wouldn’t be coming home with me. An hour later he took his last breath in my arms and through tears I thanked him for our time together, sharing 16 of his 18 years with me in Seattle and here in Brooklyn and said “I’m so sorry…” over and over for having to finally say goodbye. I left his cat carrier behind and walked back home in tears.

It took 3.5 years for me to even consider bringing another cat into my life and I have a feeling Louis played a role from the great beyond in inspiring me adopting Enzo this past April from brooklynanimalaction. I’m sure he’s getting a kick out of all of Enzo’s antics, especially waking up from a dead sleep to being a full-on live wire each morning at 4:00AM on the dot.

I scooped up Enzo this morning and even as he struggle-cuddled the entire time I told him the story of Louis, from his first day to his last, before he nipped me and ran away to chase after his favorite felt mouse.

I then walked to mexicoinmypocket, a woman-owned business on Court Street, and purchased a Dia de Los Muertos cat cavalera (each one a unique design from a Pueblan artist) to add to Louis’ mantle shrine to continue to celebrate his wondrous life. I miss you, buddy, and not a day passes where you’re not on my mind. 2025-09-25 03:42:34 It wa.. 534 +48% 40 +163%

Welcome to another edition of The Lowdown on LAST CALL. This is a highlight of what (and where) I’ve been eating and drinking. On this week’s Special “All New Orleans” Edition:

• Communing with Pableaux and the buttery-peppery BBQ Shrimp Po-Boy at Liuzza’s By The Track (liuzzas).
• Taking a spirted revolution with a Vieux Carré at The Carousel Bar & Lounge at the historic Hotel Monteleone (hotelmonteleone).
• A tale of two yin-yang breakfasts at Willa Jean (willajeanneworleans).
• Bar High Five’s Hidetsugu Ueno shakes up a Japanese Lady cocktail made with iichiko Shochu (iichiko.shochu).
• I just can’t get enough of St. Pizza (st.pizza.nola), especially their killer Calabrian Buffalo Wings and an ethereal Butterscotch Budino.
• Cooling off with a boozy Tart Cherry-Lemonade Sno-Bliz spiked with an upturned Cointreau airplane mini from Hansen’s (snobliz) at Peychaud’s Bar (peychaudsbar).
• A messy lunch with friends within the cramped quarters of Domilise’s Po-Boy & Bar (domilisespoboys) taking down this Surf & Turf Po-Boy. Here’s to more restaurants featuring a slop sink and a roll of paper towels in the dining room.
• It’s a Lambrusco Spritz & Pizza Party at The Will & The Way (thewillandthewaynola) with Julie Reiner (mixtressnyc) and her refreshing Lambrusco Gin Fizz.
• Seattle’s Rob Roy (robroyseattle) takes over Dovetail (dovetailnola) with Beignet-Infused Sazeracs for all.
• Have Muffuletta, will travel. Especially when secured the evening before your flight from Central Grocery & Deli (centralgrocerynola).
• On the hunt for Hubig’s Hand Pies (hubigs_pies_official). Hard to beat Pineapple, but I’ll keep trying.
• St.Pizza’s (st.pizza.nola) Chloe (chloeskeleton) sends me on my way with a bittersweet bambino Braulio Shakerato with raspberry syrup and lime.
• Getting ready to go out on the town with a pre-shower Frozen Irish Coffee from Erin Rose (erinrosebar).
• And much more….

Grazie Mille to David and Trevor, Rita and Jody, and the team at officinadelbere1397 for inviting and hosting me at their wonderful and expertly curated bottle shop and bookstore sandwiched between their two incredibly popular barpisellino outposts whose many guests spilled out onto the sidewalks on another steamy summer night in the Big City.

So many people turned out, including plenty of LAST CALL subscribers, and packed the room. I hit the ground running and for over two hours at my station welcomed guests, fielded questions, signed books, poured amari (neat, with ice, and/or soda) along with bambino versions of the Vino Veritas, a summer cocktail from thefuzzz made with blueberry amaro, almond orgeat, and Lambrusco garnished with fresh mint and a fat blackberry that is featured in my forthcoming book DRINKING ITALIAN. Post-event wind-down found me a little sticky, my dogs barking, and mildly exhausted, but so very grateful. Thanks again to everyone who joined us.

When it comes to updating my author photo I do what I can with what the Good Lord gave me. But it certainly helps to have photographer extraordinaire Ed Anderson (edandcamera) to be the guy pointing the camera in your direction. Like our usual guerrilla-style on-location photo shoots on the ground in Italy or traveling across America, nearly all of my finished author pics have happened rather spontaneously with Ed saying something along the lines of, “Hey, go stand up against that building/doorway/alley,” then click-click-click. I love the research, interviews, site visits, and photo shoots when putting a book together with Ed. It’s the actual writing that gives me the yips. Taking an author photo that will Iive on in perpetuity in the Library of Congress is equally nerve wracking, but photographer/magician Ed always puts me at ease. 2025-05-19 22:04:08 When it comes to up.. 507 +41% 24 +58%

On this bright and sunny Saturday/Caturday in Brooklyn, I wanted to extend a “caloroso benvenuto” and hard-launch my new roommate, Enzo (full name: Enzo Karl Furrari-Parsons), who officially moved in yesterday evening on Good Friday.

More than three years have passed since my beloved Louis left us on a Friday night in September 2021, and since then so many good-intentioned friends and virtual strangers would ask when I was going to adopt another cat. I was never ready to go through this again, for so many reasons. That loss wrecked me and a certain level of sadness lingers still. This quote from the TED LASSO program is something I turn over on my head often: “I like to think grief is the price we pay for truly loving someone. And it’s worth every penny.”

Three Saturdays ago while scrolling through distillerycats a photo of a 1-year-old cat named Karl caught my attention, as did the urgency in his need for a new foster home. The next day I filled out an application and started the two-week process to adopt him.

He was named Karl by the two German journalists who found this striking and loving cat abandoned on the streets of Kensington, Brooklyn, and rescued him. While Karl (with a K) was on my short-list of Future Cat Names, I wanted an Italian name and so Enzo he is, joining the ranks of other great Enzos like Enzo Ferrari and Italian director, screenwriter, and actor Enzo G. Castellari who served as the inspiration for Brad Pitt’s Italian actor disguise/pseudonym “Enzo Gorlomi” in INGLORIOUS BASTERDS.

My Enzo lives up to all the promise described in his adoption profile and so much more. This new responsibility and adventure is keeping me on my toes. I feel like a late-in-life new father chasing around a 1-year-old, but he’s adjusting well to his new home and I love having him here with me, and look forward to our life together.

My thanks to brooklynanimalaction for all of their help, especially Donna for guiding me through the process, Misty for being such a great foster to Karl and sending him off with his favorite one-eyed felt mouse, and Mila, who joined Donna for last night’s special delivery.

The latest installment of Dive BarJukebox features my good friend, LA-based writer, producer, activist, music aficionado, and political junkie Michael Oates Palmer (oatespalmer).

This one is especially nostalgic, romantic, and empathetic in all the right places and even includes an excellent cameo from the late, great Stephen J. Cannell—the famed television creator and producer behind “The Rockford Files”—set at the bar at the Hotel Bel-Air. Not to mention a chance encounter with Jackson Brown outside a boutique on Abbott Kinney.

MOP’s wistful annotated playlist features Otis Redding, The Kinks, The Waterboys, Emmylou Harris, Mott the Hoople, Bob Dylan, Richard Thompson, Syd Straw, John Prine, David Baerwald, Hamilton Leithauser, Richard Shindell, Dave Alvin, Billy Bragg, Jason Isbell, PJ Harvey, Jackson Browne, Bruce Springsteen, Lucinda Williams, Josh Ritter, Ronnie Lane, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and Jimmy Webb.

“Dive bars are inextricably tied to nostalgia—even in how so many of them are described with phrases like timeless and classic. l’ve put together a playlist that reflects that-especially leaning into the wistful nostalgia of old relationships from long ago. These are songs that are very much about fondly looking back not with anger, not with hurt, but the musical equivalent of raising a glass and wishing ‘em well, wherever they are. These aren’t kiss-offs. It’s just that when you’re alone, especially at a dive bar, it’s easy to think of times when you weren’t.”

On my Substack newsletter LAST CALL, Out On the Town is a regular Paid Subscriber exclusive where I break down a recent visit to a particular bar or restaurant—whether an old favorite, a new spot, or a first-time visit to a “new to me” joint.

This week’s dispatch covered a recent Saturday evening at Pitt’s (pitts_bk), Chef Jeremy Salamon’s (jeremycooks) eclectic new restaurant in Red Hook, Brooklyn.

The menu at Pitt’s, billed simply as “Supper,” is quirky and slightly challenging at times, but that may be an affection Salamon brought with him from his days at Prune. The menu isn’t meant to be encyclopedic in its descriptions of each item, but instead serves as a jumping off point to engage with your server to help guide the course of what’s to come.

The soundtrack at Pitt’s was a very BTP-approved playlist with songs like “Tempted,” “Criminal,” and “Monkey Gone to Heaven” mixed with “Cecelia,” “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” and “Goodbye, Stranger.”

Beverage Director Ben Hopkins (benhopkinsbenhopkins) proved to be the consummate host with a pleasingly manic energy of a young Charles Nelson Reilly, keeping guests at the bar entertained while guiding them through the menu with detours that bounced around from topics ranging from Sister Sledge to Gina Gershon. But after a lengthy back and forth consultation and finalizing options, it was time to order supper.

Hit the link bio to read more about my experience there and the Sazerac Negroni, Gouda Pimento Cheese & Fried Saltines, Pork Fat Fried Peanuts, Escargot with Green Goddess Butter and Ranch-Dusted Leaves, Lamb Rump with Mustard Butter, Greens and Anchovy and House Fries, and Pixie Pie.

And no, I didn’t order their breakout hit dessert, a Pancake Soufflé with Maple Syrup, this time around but I’ll be back soon. Who wants to split one with me? 2025-02-27 01:35:27 .. 193 -46% 3 -80%
