To all my toddler mamas (and daddy’s!) I know brushing is already a battlefield of its own - but flossing is ESSENTIAL once your toddler has teeth that touch! Start as early as possible - this goes for brushing too, but getting your child USED to oral hygiene is the way to form healthy habits. 2. Floss together!! Show your child how you floss your own teeth! Whenever a toddler sees you doing something new, they love to copy and explore on their own! Let them choose a floss and let them play around and try to mimic you - even if they’re not doing it the right way yet - you can then say “Can I help you?” and do it for them. 3. Choices choices choices. At this age, your toddler is starting to foster their independence, and giving your toddler the freedom to choose their flosser among different colors and shapes is a great way to keep them engaged. Happy September! Whatever phase you are in right now, here is my little dose of motivation to get you off your feet To all the students in college decided on dentistry -my biggest advice to you is to work hard but enjoy your youth. It’s very easy to get caught up in your academic priorities. But this is a time you will never get back, so make a little time to celebrate your life. Now is also the time to get curious about what you’re getting yourself into. Gain dental experience through volunteering, shadowing, or interning at dental clinics as well as join organizations to network with peers and professionals.  To the students figuring out if and how they can balance it all: its hard to take the backseat especially while already so far ahead. My advice to navigate this experience is to reflect on your priorities. Maybe you have to put your family first. Maybe you have the best support system and can handle whatever life throws at you. Either way - nothing is set in stone, and you can always realign. Establish short-term and long-term goals. What do you want to accomplish if you take a break, and what steps will you take to get back on track? To the dental students:  Dental school will test your mental (and physical) strength and endurance in a way you have never experienced before. You will be absorbing tons of information and you will be challenged like never before. The truth is that it will hit you like a ton of bricks, but there will be growing pains, and then you will figure out how to float. It is grueling, and its ok to have a good cry when it feels too overwhelming but don’t allow yourself to sink. Every time you are down. Remind yourself why you want to become a dentist and the impact you want to make. Envision the end goal. Celebrate all the  small victories and accomplishments along the way.
