I’m DJing at one of my favorite venues – Superior Ingredients. As a DJ, the venue plays a critical role in both providing the right crowd for the DJ, and the right DJ for the crowd. Ideally, you want a venue that attracts the right listeners, and a DJ that plays the right music for those listeners. In Manhattan, venues that focus on true house music are rare to find. And in Brooklyn - the house venues are usually booking house Artists. Because of this, ive shifted my focus away from DJing and more towards producing and refining my sound so I can get booked as an artist at the venues that attract true lovers of house. Which brings me to Superior Ingredients - this is a place that respects the sound of house music - encourages it, and attracts house music listeners. A place where I can play my sound and its welcomed. Tons of acts that I look up to have played here including Ship Wrek, Jackie Hollander, etc…. Im excited to tell you that I am playing a sunset set there this friday. My set will be filled with new music and unreleased gems that Ive been working on. What if Travis Scott - made house music? The other day I released an Artist Spotlight Series - where I make a mix using only the catalogue of one artist. This got me inspired to take it one step further and make some remixes. So I made - THE SCOTT EDITS I took two of my favorite acapellas from Travis Scott and made them into house records. I quit my job in New York City, gave up everything and moved away to South Carolina. Why did I do this? Im a house music producer. 27 years old, I had a great education, and I had high paying finance jobs in new york city, which I understand most people would k*ll for. I gave it a valid shot, worked at 3 different companies over 5 years, but the entire time, something didn’t feel right. I was living a life not defined by my own preferences at all. Working a career that I fell into, when truly I had zero idea what I wanted to do with my life. however, as the years went on, something became more and more clear. I had, THE CREATIVE ITCH. and for me thats music. The decision to move away and drop everything did not come lightly. For years all I could think about was the music. non stop, every minute of the day. I would make house music at night, and the next day at work i would listen to the clip on repeat – counting down the minutes to get back home to continue working on it. It wasn’t I have to, it was I need to. It wasn’t desire, it was obsession. This went on and on. Until the point where I was so suffocated and so unfocused in my career that I had no choice, but to give the music a real shot. So i quit my job, took the leap of faith, moved down to charleston and Im finally taking initiative towards building the lifestyle that I want. Here I can focus on my health, fitness and the creation of my dream life which is centered around the music. And I havent even shown yall what weve been working on. Stay tuned 🤩 House music. Because you are coming along for the journey, we might as well start at the beginning. Everyone who loves house music has that one moment where they remember falling in love with it, where they first got the feeling. Mine was when I heard the song Control - by Emmit Fenn. So, I got my first DJ board. I started making mixes in my bedroom during covid - I called them Quarantine mixes - and they actually got some traction on soundcloud. When I moved to NYC I started playing clubs - building my way up to becoming a resident DJ at a club called the Palace. Now this was fun, but something was missing. I needed my own sound. This is when I really amped up the music production, putting my head down for years into ableton. Making as many tracks as I possibly could, and all of them were bad.  But, eventually they started to get better. As the vision was becoming clearer, the desire to make music was only getting stronger. It became harder and harder to balance my full time job, NYC lifestyle, social life, and hours producing songs. Being good at my career meant being fully present every day, but all I could think about every hour I was at work was my music. Hi I’m Bishop, a house music producer who for the past 5 YEARS has been teaching myself music production.
