![Back to school— we’ve got a kindergartener and first grader in the house 🍎
Last year was a bit of trial and error with my first year teaching Ruth; I was inconsistent and a bit bogged down by trying too many different curriculums. This is what we’ve narrowed down to!
•Math With Confidence: I can’t say enough good things about this math curriculum. It is engaging, never boring, and requires very little prep on my part. Most lessons I can just glance at the materials list and read off of the teaching script as we go. There are 4 lessons per week, but this year I am aiming for 5 per week as a buffer for holidays and travel.
•Reading: We borrow BOB books for Franklin and various Level 1 reading books for Ruth from the library. Last year and this past summer we worked from various phonics programs, but found the most success with the Reading.com app! In our experience, it has been well worth the money for the convenience of basically having a whole learn-to-read curriculum on your phone.
•History: I like the Charlotte Mason approach to history, which is basically just using regular picture books and historical fiction stories to teach about events throughout time. It was important to me to find a curriculum that included perspectives outside of the traditional colonialist narrative and without a heavily religious slant, and I was struggling!
I ended up finding an awesome set of history reading lists on etsy for only 50 cents a pop. I’ll link in my stories/highlight.
•Science: right now we are just using books from the library and children’s nature magazines (and the kids take a couple weekly charter nature classes) but I would love any curriculum suggestions!
•Writing: We use the Handwriting Without Tears workbooks, but our kids’ favorite way to practice is just writing letters and notes to loved ones. I definitely think curriculum is optional for handwriting.]()

![I didn’t feel “in love”. I was constantly telling myself that he was the problem. That our home would be more peaceful and easier without him in it. I felt hopeless and powerless towards the endless cycle of tension and arguments.
Today’s podcast episode is the first time we’ve really opened up about our struggles and my breaking point.
A year later, and I didn’t even know it was possible for a relationship to change the way it has. It wasn’t magic, it wasn’t “meant to be”, it wasn’t something mysterious and unattainable.
It was commitment to each other,
commitment to couples counseling (for a year+, not a couple months), and an EFFECTIVE therapist. We had seen two ineffective therapists that had us going in circles before finding our Gottman-trained couples counselor.
Being stuck in toxic relationship cycles felt so lonely. I want people to know they’re not alone.
In a culture that tells you “relationships should be easy”, we want to share our story and maybe bring some hope to others in similar situations.]()

![Ruth saved this rabbit! We’ve lost several runts in past litters who just don’t get enough milk in the first week. unfortunately, baby rabbits are super hard to hand feed properly and we’ve never had success.
we could see this one was getting thinner and didn’t have a full belly when we’d check in the mornings. (did you know mama rabbits have the most nutrient-dense mammalian milk and only nurse once or twice a day for 5 minutes?!)
Ruth came running into the house one afternoon with the rabbit kit— “GUYS, it got milk!!” she had held the baby underneath the mama rabbit until she pulled it out and saw milk around its mouth! over the next couple days she initiated the same process and that’s all it took to get the baby back on its feet :’) I was so impressed with her intuitive action ❤️ kids are so smart]()
