Day 2 - There’s certainly one way to wake up in the morning….cold water swimming in a river in Scotland 💦🧜‍♀️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Today’s hike took us 26km from Gairlochy to South Laggan 🏞️ - following the beautiful (and brilliantly named!) Loch Lochy for most of the way. The views were stunning, the feet… not so much 😅 after a few unexpected detours from route closures. But that post-hike pizza and beer? We enjoyed the West Highland Way so much that we decided to take on another hike in Scotland called the Great Glen Way - a 75mile / 120km hike from Fort William to Inverness. Taking about 5-7 days 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🥾🏕️ Actually some people decide to combine both hikes in one go! 🤯 Absolutely unimaginable if you are wild camping like us. July 22nd, 2023 Day 8 – West Highland Way ⛰️🥾 Kinlochleven ➝ Fort William | 24km We woke up at our final wild camping spot on the outskirts of Kinlochleven ⛺️🌲 and set off on the last stretch of the WHW. Along the way we stumbled upon an abandoned bothy 🏚️, and as the path opened up, the views towards Fort William revealed the mighty Ben Nevis 🏔️ — Scotland’s highest peak and a fitting sight to guide us to the finish. Reaching the final checkpoint in Fort William was such a mix of happiness and gratitude 🙌. We’d been blessed with good weather, tasty food, incredible camping spots, and unforgettable views every single day 🌞🥾. July 21st, 2023 Day 7 – West Highland Way ⛰️🥾 Kingshouse ➝ Devil’s Staircase ➝ Kinlochleven | 15km We woke up in Kingshouse on the edge of Glencoe ⛺️, with incredible views of Buachaille Etive Mòr🏔️. The day began with a cheeky pint 🍺 to fuel up (and calm the nerves) before tackling the infamous Devil’s Staircase 😈. Despite its intimidating name, the climb rewarded us with some of the most breathtaking views of the WHW so far 🏞️🤩. From there, we continued on to Kinlochleven, the penultimate checkpoint of the trail. July 20th, 2023 Day 6 – West Highland Way ⛰️🥾 Auch ➝ Bridge of Orchy ➝ Inveroran ➝ Loch Tulla ➝ Kingshouse | 30km We woke up in a quiet Glen 🌲⛺️, freshened up, and Micha even braved a bath in the stream before setting off ❄️🛁. Our first stop was The Bridge of Orchy Hotel for brunch 🥪🍳 (highly recommend the Cullen Skink soup 🐟) before continuing on to Inveroran for a quick cider break 🍎🍺. From there, we carried on past the beautiful Loch Tulla 🌊 - but not without being swarmed by midges 🦟😂. Thank goodness for our head nets and Avon’s Skin So Soft (it actually works!). By evening, we reached Kingshouse, where we found a spot to camp near the hotel. July 19th, 2023 Day 5 – West Highland Way ⛰️🥾 Falls of Falloch ➝ Crianlarich ➝ Tyndrum ➝ Auch | 21km We woke up after a night camping by a waterfall near the Falls of Falloch 🌊⛺️ and set off towards Crianlarich, where we stopped for breakfast 🥞☕. The early miles were tough enough that Justina even contemplated hopping on a train (just kidding) 🚆😂. A few hours later, we reached Tyndrum, where spirits lifted with a well-earned pint of Guinness 🍺. Whilst most walkers call it a night there, we decided to push on further. We were lucky enough to have caught golden hour and the views were some of the best of the WHW 🌅✨. July 18th, 2023 Day 4 – West Highland Way ⛰️🥾 Inversnaid ➝ Inverarnan | 14km We kicked off the morning in Inversnaid with a cheeky coffee and a bacon roll 🥓🥪 before setting off along the rugged shores of Loch Lomond 🌊. Along the way, we stumbled across an abandoned bothy 🏚️ and eventually reached a viewpoint overlooking the loch - such a rewarding moment after 2 full days walking its length 🙌. From there, we made our way into Inverarnan, where a cold pint of Tennents 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🍺 (a must after a long hike!) awaited us. July 17th, 2023 Day 3 - West Highland Way ⛰️🥾 Rowardennan -> Inversnaid | 14km Woke up after camping in the woods just outside Rowardennan 🌲⛺️ with our aim set on Inversnaid 🥾. We started the day with Justina foraging our breakfast of fresh berries 🍓🫐 and then took a dip in the very cold loch ❄️💦 to fully wake up. From there, we followed the rugged edge of Loch Lomond 🌊 for 14 km (8.7 miles) until we reached our next camping spot — right on the beach next to Inversnaid Hotel 🏨🏖️. July 16th, 2023 Day 2 – West Highland Way ⛰️🥾 Drymen → Balmaha | 13 km Fueled by a full Scottish breakfast, we left Drymen under a light drizzle — raincoats on, legs ready. The trail took us through peaceful woodlands, open fields, and winding paths with occasional glimpses of the loch through the trees. The scenery was lush, green, and quietly stunning — classic Highlands beauty in every direction 🍃⛰️🌿 Along the way, we stopped at a scenic beer garden and broke out our travel-size Quirkle for a quick game. Fiercely competitive, slightly chaotic, and easily one of our smartest packing decisions 🎲🍻 Later, we made our way down to the lochside and cracked open Loch Lomond beers at Loch Lomond. 🏁 July 15th, 2023 Day 1 – West Highland Way ⛰️🥾 Milngavie ➝ Drymen | 19 km We kicked off our 154 km journey on the iconic West Highland Way with 7 kg backpacks packed with all the essentials we’d need for the next 8 days — hearty food, cozy shelter, and layers for all ten unpredictable Scottish seasons 😆☀️☔️💨🌪️ The trail began in Milngavie and quickly led us through peaceful woodlands, rolling farmland, and quiet, meandering country tracks. The fresh air and gentle terrain made for a scenic and soul-soothing start 🥾🍃🌿 We camped just outside Drymen for the night — our feet were aching, shoulders sore, but spirits sky-high.
