March was full! We went to ExpoWest - one of the largest food shows in the world and connected with a lot of good peers, mentors and advisors. It’s cool to get recognized, feel part of the “scene” and make real community in this CPG ecosystem after 5 long years. Deli Boys launch was lit! I’ve already spoken extensively about it. Go watch if you haven’t! Taking my family to Bungalow is always a moment. Took my mom last year but it’s always a beautiful experience to see how Indian fine dining has evolved and share with the people the taught you how to love food in the first place. We are living in truly terrifying times and I’m seeing a lot of friends and folks globally crashing out. It’s like COVID really messed our collective psyche up and we’re severely acting out. DELI BOYS X KCC!!! Shoutout to thethirdplaceco for bringing all of this together with the Hulu team. Ani is gonna hate this caption cus he thinks I’m globally crashing out but guess what?! You can’t just “do things”!! Well, you can but it takes time and budgets and negotiating and craft and planning and leadership and delegating and working with people and being flexible and fighting for your vision and compromising. People these days are so obsessed with the “final product” a la social media they miss everything that goes behind it. It’s mostly me just mulling. Sometimes I mull in the kitchen, other times I mull behind excel sheets but everyone needs to MULL MORE before they present themselves to the public. It took me five years to finally show up to an event in some semblance of a fit not looking like a zombie or acting like one cus I finally have an amazing team helping me out, making sure things run smoothly. Specific shoutout to ohitstahmid who came to nyc in 2018 to work with us as a wee young whippersnapper and has grown into a creative director with real purpose n vision. Some moments from 2024. Yea yea I forgot to post this during the new year new me stuff… oh well.. Entrepreneurship is strange because one day you’re wondering if you’re going to make it to the next month and then it comes and you’re having chai with…Pharrell? 🎢 When I visited India in 2018, I thought making a chai business was gonna be this cute little side project and wanted KCC to be artsy, nuanced and small. I brought this little recorder and took “first person audio” of my trip, hoping to make it into a gimlet media esque start up podcast. Anyways, I edited it during COVID, scripted it and added voice overs but never got it to where I wanted it. Took me 10 hours to maybe get 7-20 minutes of usable material? If you had told me 5 years ago that one of the biggest names in Hollywood would be teaming up with KCC, I probably would’ve laughed and went back to making chai. Those first few years were an endless toil. We spent many sleepless nights trying to figure out every little metric and detail to make this business work. KCC became bigger than me. The stories we grew up with — chai on the streets and in our homes — these stories needed to be told properly. When I first watched Homecoming King on Netflix, I was blown away by Hasan’s ability to bring humor to the first generation experience. He spoke of real, relatable immigrant struggles — things we saw our parents go through as they sought footing in this country — but flipped them in a way only a true comedian can. I got a whole new level of appreciation for his work while being on tour together this year. Every set, even in between sets, he’s tweaking and improving with his team to get better and better. That’s the mark of a true champion and I’m so excited to bring him and his team’s excellence to KCC. I stand outside the cafes a lot these days and quietly observe the people walking in. Friends, lovers, families, old and young, black, brown, white and everything in between — all with big smiles and big expectations for this humble cup of chai that we brew. It’s a terrifying responsibility and one that I don’t take lightly. So THANK YOU — to every single person who has had a cup of KCC — at their homes, in our shops, or now increasingly in your favorite local cafes. What does this mean for KCC? The takeover! We get to continue building KCC our way as the first authentic chai experience in the US. Hasan will be hands on in amplifying the brand, lending his creative insights and building the first household name for chai in the West. Took my Nissan rogue on one last road trip to Ocean City, Maryland before I returned her. Although it was two separate leases, I had this car since 2018 - the farmers market days. The chai mobile was used on countless trips to restaurant depot, doing uptown deliveries during the pandemic, back n forth across the borderline every morning as I commuted from Jersey. Every cowboy needs a trusty steed, so thank you for your service. Separately, MD was amazing! Fresh peaches from the farms, funnel cake on the boardwalk, crabs and old bay! 2023 Part III — Hardships. Like Bukowski said, “what matters most is how well you walk through the fire” — not if you do, but how well you do. Opening cafe 2 pushed my limits once more — bigger and better 😪 The “where’s my clipboard” days almost seem like decades ago. (I carry a clipboard that basically is a revolving to-do list that constantly changes throughout the project 😌) I think I was sick on ii opening night? Don’t remember it, again. My car got booted the morning of 2 catering events - some $2800 in covid-era parking tickets…The cafe flooded with sewage (🤢), leaks through the basement. You learn to face each problem with a certain level of grit. Sleepin in the whip sometimes girl I was sleepin upright… December was the topper. During our busiest season ever, our entire operations fell apart. Ani and I simply rolled up our sleeves and did the work no one wanted to do. Slowly, corrected the ship (it’s a big ship now!). That’s 9pm-3am shifts on top of of “regular work” — whatever that is. Failure builds resilience and the utter fear of failure — that terrifying feeling — leads to continued excellence.
