Ben's Adoption Puts #TheRescueEffect in Motion 🌊 At angelsofassisi's August adoption event in Virginia, Stu C. and his wife, Casey, made sure they were first in line to meet Ben, a mixed-breed puppy they had fallen in love with online. They had recently said goodbye to Camden, their family dog of 12 years, and felt ready to welcome a rescue pup into the house. Angels of Assisi's event was hosted as part of #TheRescueEffect, the ASPCA's national campaign highlighting and supporting the lifesaving work of shelters and rescues across the nation! So far, we have 600+ animal organizations participating and have been able to provide grants to some organizations and shelters, like Angels of Assisi, to help waive adoption fees and support their shelter operations further. 7-month-old Ben and his sister, Lego, were born in Alabama to a feral dog who was being cared for by a local family. The pair were two of the 10 animals that found their homes during the event! Ben, now called Benny, has settled into Stu and Casey's home and routine. RESCUED ❗ Nearly 20 dogs removed from unsafe conditions. The Star Police Department in North Carolina recently requested the ASPCA's assistance with the rescue of nearly 20 dogs living in extremely unsanitary and hazardous conditions. In collaboration with Montgomery County Animal Services, our teams removed the animals after they were found living in extremely unsanitary and hazardous conditions in the home. The dogs are currently at an ASPCA facility, receiving forensic veterinary examinations and much-needed medical and behavioral care. Our experts are dedicated to providing these dogs, some of whom are extremely fearful, with the care they need to heal and trust again. This resilient three-legged pup is held up by a whole community of support 🧡 The NYPD were executing an unrelated search warrant on a chilly November day in 2024 when they discovered a young puppy soon to be named, Chip. At only 3 months old, he was found in bad shape with significant open wounds all over his body. He was brought to the ASPCA Animal Recovery Center, where further diagnostics revealed a severe bone infection, leading to the amputation of his left front leg. After his surgery, Chip began extensive physical therapy. He needed to wear a bootie while walking outside, and a carpal brace to help support his right wrist, as he was putting too much weight on his right leg to compensate. The biggest barrier? Limiting a young puppy's energy so he can heal properly! Our expert Behavior Team organized a thoughtful plan to creatively provide enrichment, while also keeping him calm, and to make sure he was being socialized including activities like stroller rides to introduce him to the great outdoors! Despite his past, Chip was nothing but sweet and social every step of the way. Once Chip was deemed adoptable and his NYPD case closed, we partnered with muddypawsrescuenyc to welcome him into their adoption program. To date, Muddy Paws has accepted over 30 dogs from the ASPCA, including Chip, making them an invaluable rescue partner. Chip spent time with two foster families and quickly became a staff favorite (to no one's surprise!). All that was left was to find him his adoptive family. Lillis M. found himself considering adoption after his previous pup, Kebe, passed away. He followed Muddy Paws Rescue online, where he became enamored with this tripod puppy, Chip. Surprised that potential adopters passed due to the extra care he requires with just one front leg, Lillis adopted Chip on March 29th. How 'The Cat Mom' has helped save 27 lives from coast to coast ✈️😺 While getting her undergraduate degree at UCLA, Emma B. felt inspired to start fostering. One of Emma's childhood cats, Ginger, had ongoing medical needs that left a lasting impression, which sparked Emma's interest in fostering more complex and vulnerable kitties who require extra care. After onboarding with the ASPCA, she welcomed her first foster cat, Miso. She soon began caring for more intensive cats and started her journey as a dedicated foster for some of our LA team's most fragile felines. In May of 2023, Emma received a message from our foster team asking if she could care for two very sick 2-week-old kittens named Pinto and Bean - Emma's soon-to-be fifth and sixth fosters. Bean was significantly more ill and smaller than Pinto and tragically passed away just after a few days in foster care. Pinto was resilient and luckily pulled through due to his larger size. Emma also cared for Pinto through gastrointestinal parasites, a ringworm scare, and getting diagnosed with a benign heart murmur. After being through so much together, she knew she couldn't say goodbye to Pinto and decided to adopt him. 🧡 The fostering didn't stop there, though! Emma continued to foster to help Pinto with his socialization, and because she loved it so much. She and her roommate were dubbed the title of 'The Cat Moms', and would constantly have other college students coming over to play with their foster kittens. After graduating from UCLA, Emma and Pinto relocated to New York City, where she and her boyfriend, Jere, quickly registered to foster with the ASPCA again. Since their move, the couple has fostered seven kittens, including their current foster cat, Nova, bringing Emma's total number of fostered kittens to 27! One dedicated foster volunteer helps this shy cat blossom 🌷🐱 Tulip was one of more than 200 animals seized from a nonprofit animal rescue organization in Los Angeles in October of 2022 and impounded at the LA County Department of Downey Animal Care and Control Center (DACC). The majority of the cats were under-socialized, shut down and in need of treatment for various medical conditions. Shelter staff noticed a decline in her behavior and continued to provide toys, treats, and more to enrich and lighten up her spirits. Once DACC was legally cleared to release the animals to rescue partners, we were able to safely place Tulip in foster care, where she could continue to heal. Lisa A. has fostered hundreds of cats for the ASPCA since 2017 and is no stranger to working with shy cats. She could sense Tulip had a loving heart despite her fear, so she set her up in a large bathroom where she could decompress. Once Tulip grew more comfortable with Lisa, she soon had more access to the rest of her home. She even became BFFS with Lisa's resident senior cats! Lisa cared for Tulip for 9 months, playing a crucial role in setting her up for success to find her new home. Although it was a tearful goodbye, Lisa knew Tulip had someone special out there who would love her like no other. Someone like Chris N., who found himself on the ASPCA's Los Angeles Feline Program's website, looking at who was available for adoption. Tulip caught his eye, and the ASPCA staff arranged a virtual meet and greet. Chris fell in love and adopted Tulip in July 2024. While Tulip did take some time to warm up, he gave her plenty of time and space to adjust at her own pace. Now, she wants all of his attention!
