🍃 Self portraits at Tokyo’s best museum 👘 Even after 5 years of self portraits, there’s still much to learn. I tried to play more with light and focusing on different details this time. It’s really hard to get the focus right when working without a Bluetooth clicker, but I’m super proud of the results. After becoming a mom, our photo albums are filled with photos of our children. I know so many moms who are so sad there aren’t many good photos of themselves 🥺 Taking things into my own hands and learning how to take photos on my own has been so liberating. 🌸 Cosmos field blooming 🫧 Cosmos flowers generally peak around mid to late October in Tokyo. But there are some fields that already have a good amount of them in bloom, including this one in Koganej Park! 🍃 Rediscovering Tokyo’s best museum🍁 This spot in west Tokyo is my favorite place to go to when I want to have a walk in nature but still be surrounded by lots of interesting things to photograph. 🥀 Spider Lily Season 🪭 For just a week or so in the end of September, these mystical looking flowers bloom across Japan. They are commonly found near grave sites as they’re associated with death. For more practical reasons, they are found nearby rivers that surround rice fields as their poison wards off pests. 🐇 Kyoto Shōrinji 🌾 The first time I visited this spot was in 2021 November. It’s a small temple with stunning maple leaves and beautiful wagasa decorations. Back in 2021 they had a simple cut-out goshuin in red and yellow. ♨️ All-night onsen near Tokyo Skytree ⤵️ Daikokuyu Oshiage Onsen daikokuyu.onsen was opened in 1949 (Showa 24) and is run as a family business, now in its 3rd generation. One of the most unique points about this spot are the hours. They are open ALL NIGHT 🌙 so it’s especially awesome if you are staying near the area and can walk over for a nice soak. The prices are also very reasonable: 🎟 Adult: 550 yen (Kids entry fee range from 100~450 yen) 🎟 Add-on sauna costs between 300~400 yen 🧖🏻‍♀️ Rental towel-set are 130 yen ♨️ Other items you can purchase include toothbrush/toothpaste, skin-care set (130 yen), contact lens solution and more 🍋 Herbal bath type changes daily, so check their schedule beforehand 📆 Their hours: Weekdays from 3pm ~ next day 10am Saturdays from 2pm ~ next day 10am Sundays from 1pm ~ next day 10am 💤 Closed on Tuesdays, unless its a public holiday ** I asked the staff about the most quiet time. It’s generally weekdays sometime after opening till around 6pm. ♨️ Mens and women baths are separated, and since there’s only 1 large outdoor bath, the days alternate. 🏮 Year-round matsuri vibes 🏨 This is my 3rd time staying at hoshinoresorts_aomoriya and all 3 have been different seasons. And I can confidently say I will be back again because of how much fun it is. Here are my top reasons why: ➀ Nebuta matsuri all-year: Michinoku Matsuriya is a show that takes place every night in the hotel to experience the festival energy ➁ Seasonal decorations: lanterns are placed throughout the hotel, especially on the floor for the onsen and souvenir shop ➂ Crafting activities: this varies by season, but I was able to make a Nebuta goldfish lantern this time ➃ Really yummy snacks: the limited garlic beer garden this summer had some addictive garlic flavored snacks The other obvious but important things I love about Aomoriya are its Onsen & Sauna facilities, arcade game corner (my son’s favorite), spacious rooms with western beds and tatami floors (my husband’s favorite), apple juice tree that serves apple juice from a faucet, and super cute yukata rental. Honestly, I wouldn’t call this place a hotel. It’s a whole experience. If you really want to soak in the best hospitality, food, experience, and festival vibes that Aomori has to offer, you have to stay here! Hotels and transport are booked out months in advance, so you’ll want to start planning early. 📆 Aomori Nebuta Festival dates: Aug 2~7th (Fireworks on the last day) 🏨 Book no later than May, you can book rooms already 1 year in advance 🚅 Shinkansen ticketing opens 30 days prior to the travel date, however they get booked out within 10 minutes during festival period, so be online and ready to get your seat. It originates from Tokushima Prefecture, however there are many big performances in Tokyo as well. 🏮 Aomori Nebuta Festival 👺 This festival is one of the most popular festivals to attend in Tohoku region in summer. Many hotels are booked far out in advance, and it’s well worth the effort to make the trek up north. Another unique thing about this festival is, you can rent the outfit in town and join-in on the parade. It’s an amazing way to both experience and help preserve this festival, and the more the merrier. Since the floats are made of paper, on (rare) rainy days, they’re covered in plastic. We were so worried the parade was going to be canceled, but the participants kept dancing, chanting, and pushing these large floats till the very end. 🏮Aomori Nebuta Matsuri 🪭 This year’s Nebuta Festival was met with heavy rain on the last night time parade. Despite that, 23 large floats was still paraded around the city, with enthusiastic crowds dancing and spectators chanting “Rassera” together. The finale with 3 large floats on the ocean accompanied by fireworks for 2 hours was spared by the rain. It’s definitely worth staying for an extra day to see both land and sea versions of this festival 🥹 While it’s possible to watch without booking seats, it’s better to reserve proper seats as the crowds are pretty big for this bucket list festival. 🎋 Sendai Tanabata Festival 💫 It’s been a dream to visit this festival for a few years 🥹 I first visited Sendai 3 years ago with my family but we were only able to see the museum. Seeing the whole shotengai covered in decoration for the full matsuri is a totally different experience! If you pay close attention, the decorations are prepared by shops in front of them, so you’ll find interesting designs and colors depending on the shop! 📆 Sendai Tanabata festival dates: Aug 6-8 each year The decorations get taken down around 7pm or so on the last day, so if you’re planning to go, arrive earlier in the day! 📸 Photo tips: try to get there before 9am to avoid crowds as shops aren’t open yet. If it’s crowded, shoot in a down up angle so cut out the crowds in the back!
