The first sign that this 19th-century residence is not your standard Pinterest archetype of a Brooklyn town house appears on the front door—a bespoke bronze knob that looks strangely like Globey from Pee-wee’s Playhouse. Welcome to the mad, mad, mad, mad world of Melia Marden (chefmelia), Frank Sisti Jr., and their two children, Alfred and Daphne.

Upon the death of legendary fashion designer Giorgio Armani at 91, AD looks back at his holiday home in Tuscany.

“A home is a nest, where the most important thing is not the surroundings, but who lives there,” he told AD in a 1983 tour of his Forte dei Marmi home. Armani, the revolutionary designer who left an indelible mark on fashion and interior design over his 50-year career, often opened the doors of his self-designed spaces to AD—from a 17th-century Switzerland retreat to a Far East–inspired Saint-Tropez abode. “I have fun with my homes, which have been my greatest investments, 2025-09-05 03:30:12 Upon the deat.. 36,624 +80% 154 -0%
It’s official! The neutral reign is ending—color now rules the room. Over the past few years we’ve seen it reenter the home through green kitchens, rich dark millwork, and spaces drenched in a single hue. Homeowners and designers are embracing the power of color, steering interiors from the cream, beige, and gray safety zone that has dominated taste for nearly two decades.

In this AD PRO members-only trend report, we explore color from every angle.

“We have a little oasis in the middle of all this industry,” says designer sabine_marcelis, from her new Rotterdam studio in the Netherlands. Outside the nearly 20,000-square-foot space, seagulls squawk; a crane lifts sand and plops it on a boat. But inside, slabs of colored glass, hunks of polished resin, and sundry material experiments gleam like mirages in the sunlight that streams in from the ceiling and windows.

Few franchises have dazzled interior design and architecture lovers in the way that downtonabbey_official has. Over the course of six seasons and two movies, fans have come to expect a certain level of elegance and verisimilitude in all of Downton’s sets, a tall order for longtime series production designer Donal Woods. Now, it all comes to a close when ‘Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale,’ premieres on September 12. While fans should expect all of the beloved Downton locations to return this time around, AD is revealing three never-before-seen sets for the first time.

“I really liked my apartment,” says bobbyflay. “But I really wanted to love my apartment.”

Almost a decade after moving into a 1905 red brick Tribeca warehouse, the celebrity chef felt his interiors looked dated. (Except for the kitchen—he really loved his kitchen.) So he had a decision to make: Change the scenery and relocate, or change the scenery and renovate. He hunkered down and made a call to Olivia Capuano of oliviajane.design.

After more than a decade of living in the space, the celebrity chef and restaurateur teamed up with interior designer Olivia Jane of oliviajane.design to give his apartment a full renovation. The pair aimed to enhance the open-air loft feel of the apartment, which is located in a century-old warehouse. Naturally, the heart of the home is a chef-worthy kitchen equipped with professional-grade appliances, clever storage, and plenty of counter space–perfect for cooking, entertaining, and unwinding.

At a time when many designers seem to be competing to win the maximalist sweepstakes, Benjamin Johnston aimed for “a well-executed minimalism, where it’s not so empty that it feels barren, but has just the right number of elements to feel considered and thoughtful.”

Inspired by the churchlike overtones of Tudor architecture, Johnston gave his redesign the grandness of a cathedral, but the meditative quietness of a monastery. The process, he says, was one of streamlining—a “carving away” at the contours of the home, “paring them down to the most simple, elegant manifestation.”

Ordering furniture online is one thing; buying a house sight unseen is another. But when art and antiques dealer Ashley Brenninkmeijer (thebeauxjournals) and her young family relocated to Miami in the throes of the pandemic, the housing market was so competitive that they purchased a 1960s single-level bungalow entirely online.

Upon arrival to the Sunshine State, they found the home was building-grade standard with the usual suspects of a half-hearted renovation: polished travertine, shiny wood, and ceramic tiling covered the original terrazzo flooring. The aim was simple: to make the house beautiful and create an environment for her family to feel at ease that reflected their tastes and passions.

“Me being a Caribbean girl, I wanted hot weather, sunshine, and a really beautiful pool,” winnieharlow says.

A few years ago, after a lifetime in rented apartments, Harlow was ready to find a more permanent place to call home. Having relocated to Los Angeles for more space during the pandemic, and with her lease in New York City about to end, she thought, Why not just stay? House hunting soon became Harlow’s main quarantine hobby, and by the end of the year she closed on an expansive newly built five-bedroom property.

To craft their dream NYC home with the view and space they wanted, chris_meloni and his wife, designer and artist Sherman Williams, had to stitch together six adjacent apartments.

The couple worked with architect Alexander Loyer Hughes (kurv_architecture) who gutted the interiors to start fresh and create a cohesive feel throughout. The result is both bold and personal: a colorful mix that balances sophistication with ease.

“The beauty of the scenery impacted every move we made. We were constantly looking to frame views and manipulate sight lines to build expectation and heighten the drama,” Brian Messana explains.

Architecture firm Messana O’Rorke’s design straddles the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries, resolving the potentially conflicting demands of contextual sensitivity and contemporary brio. To lighten the visual impact of the 5,000-square-foot structure, Messana and O’Rorke broke it down into four volumes attached by glass-enclosed hallways.
