![Florence, 17 years later. A pilgrimage back to the city that held me during a classic college existential crisis. I didn’t come to see the Duomo and the Uffizi. I was really visiting her—the 21-year-old me who spent hours journaling on the Ponte Vecchio, trying to decode life, love, and career with the help of a pink mini iPod.
So, what would current me tell younger me?
I sat on that same bridge and imagined it. I’d say, “Trust the journey. There is no perfect ending, only an unfolding.” And Younger Aparna would be pissed! She’d tell me I lost the plot and to get my s**t together. Because for her, the urgency, the sweetness, was in believing the next move was everything.
This is the exact crossroads I write about in my memoir, She’s Unlikeable. And women around the world have written to me saying it was like reading their own diary—they’ve resonated with it, messaged me about it, laughed about it alongside me. Because they remember their own version of that bridge, their own “crisis” at 21, the profound sweetness of believing your entire life is about to be decided.
Returning wasn’t just a visit to an old home, but to an old self. The true landmarks weren’t the tourist spots, but the local gelato shop, my neighborhood market with the dried strawberries, the ghost of my apartment (Via Santa Reparata, 12d to be exact).
And that Aparna? She’s still there, wandering the cobblestones waiting for life “to begin”- a beautiful reminder that the most important journey isn’t about the destination, but about becoming.
