For the past year, OCEANS MAGAZINE has been running a series on Japandi Houses & akiya revitalization.
Sharing how we buy old homes, design them, source materials, and work with the community.
Today the final article is out 📰
It features Sangenjaya House, Nakano House, and Sangenjaya Villa - and the journey behind renovating homes in Japan.
This last episode was extra special,
together with Namigai-san, who has run a tatami shop in Sangenjaya for decades. Since 2020, he has supported me with tatamis & fusumas, and even shared techniques for making tatami mats I had only ever seen in temples before. Today, his craft lives on in all of our builds.
I can only imagine what he thought when I first walked into his shop in April 2020 — just days before the state of emergency — after buying my first akiya, asking in broken Japanese how to throw away old tatamis and how I could design my own 😂
