Can you teach an old dog new tricks? Of course you can. This senior chihuahua mix came to me with serious fear aggression when someone touched him. His owner had gotten bitten so many times, her hands were covered in scars. Here’s a quick video of me using the classic “Counter Conditioning” method to deal with this type of aggression. Counter conditioning is simply exposing and acclimating an animal to when they’re most afraid of. In this case it’s touch. I dealt with issues like this time and again over the years when I was filming Lucky Dog. Just a quick note because I know a lot of people will ask…. Yes he’s been checked out by a vet for any physical conditions that may be causing this. I always make sure my clients do a full health check before bringing a dog to me. Some dogs just have an aggressive issue that gets worse over time if it’s not dealt with. Seems to be what I’m dealing with here. Finally returned to the ranch in CA after three months of living in Florida. The pack greeted me as expected. I’ve lived in California most of my adult life. This state gave me the greatest career I could ever ask for. I trained animals for film and televising in CA. I filmed every season of Lucky Dog in CA. I filmed a number of Shark Week documentaries in CA. I met and married my wife at our beautiful CA ranch. Today, after 25 years of living here, I’m finally saying goodbye and opening a new location in Jupiter, Florida. Our LA location is still operational and I’ll be back every few months.
