Didn’t realize this conversation needed to be had but there appears to be some confusion on the point of having a cosmetology education so I just wanted to bring some clarity here. Everyone under the doing hair umbrella is important and valuable, however our level of understanding isn’t the same. Also where you get your education also matters similarly to Ivy leave schools vs jr college. Where a person studies, and who their teachers were plays a huge role in what you experience as a client. I used to judge people so hard for relaxing their edges but here we are 🤣🤷🏽‍♀️ I’ve been coloring outside the lines quite a bit lately and while I still maintain my team natural status this hack has been great for me as a mom in this heat with a toddler just trying to somewhat look together 😩🤣. At the end of the day use all the tools in the toolbox ok! I use mizani sensitive scalp relaxer and the trick for me is to push the edges forward so that I don’t go into my hairline literally just smoothing the edges only. The Daniel fast has been on my spiritual bucket list for a min and I gotta say it was one of the best decisions I made not just spiritually but physically and mentally as well. Friend, I decided to try the 1/2 boho braids 1/2 weave combo and let me just say this, never again 🙅🏽‍♀️. I have many thoughts on this hair trend, but to summarize it was too many steps to really get it how I wanted it ie color, density, time etc. All under the guise of thinking it would be easier but ended up being way more work than I wanted to deal with. My advice, just get your full hair braided 🙄 or do the wig. I think moments like this highlight your personal relationship to beauty; what you need but also what you DON’T want. I personally need styles that take less time, have more versatility, and a more polished look after a good workout. Happy deaf awareness month 🤟🏽🧏‍♀️🦻 Come with us to the audiologist. We have checkups every 3-6 months and he’s doing really well! His #cochlearimplants give him access to sound at almost a normal hearing level when his devices are on. As a family we opted for Ashton to have surgury to be able to hear with devices. When the light is green ✅ he has access to sound. When the lights are orange or there’s nothing on his head he can not hear most things we commonly take for granted. However being deaf is his identity, and his super power 💪🏽🦸🏽‍♂️⚡️ As we navigate this journey with him it’s not to try to “make” him fit into a hearing world but to allow him access to everything the world has to offer so that he can decide who he wants to be as he grows. One day he may decide he doesn’t want to wear his devices and that’s where sign language comes in. But with lots of speech therapy and consistant sound access he will be holding conversations and listening closely right along with the rest of his peers. Sharing our story also helps normalize seeing children with hearing devices and those flashing lights on their head. I’d love for hearing devices to be normalized the same way we see glasses 👓 🤓. Cochlear (Ko-clee-er) implants or CI’s is what we call them. Some kiddos wear hearing aids which are different but very similar. We just call them his extra ears. I’m still on a high from this weekend’s blackbeautyroster brunch. The energy in that room was magnetic ✨✨✨🥂✨✨✨. My biggest takeaways are 1. This week was wild fam 😩😭 I’m still processing but grateful to say we are home and Ashton is on the mend ❤️‍🩹. We woke up Saturday to a super swollen ear, bounced around from urgent care to the ER, and then rushed to children’s hospital for an emergency surgury that then deescalated to IV antibiotics treatment. Never heard of #mastoiditis but I’m here to share the tale! If your child is having pain in or behind the ear and the ear is sticking out away from the face take them to the ER immediately! As if we don’t have enough to worry about as parents 😩 check my stories for more details on this saga. I’m thankful for our treatment at childrensla and the care we received from all the teams treating Ashton. After almost a week in the hospital, me and the hubby taking shifts, we are finally home as a family again. To everyone that prayed for Ash bear thank you! Thank you for all the beautiful birthday wishes I had the best time in #mexicocity with the hubby this weekend. It’s one of those places that has been on my bucket list for a minute and it’s not too far from LA. I’m still finding the groove between motherhood and me time but I definitely needed a few days away to explore and retreat. We ate good 🙌🏽 drank lots of Mezcal, slept in, watched the sunrise, toured the city and just took a few days to just be. Everybody talks about balance but I don’t really think that exists. I feel like some things come higher on the priority list than others but you never truly have balance do you? Since motherhood I’ve struggled to make peace with this idea. I wanted to show up in every aspect of life killing it 😩🤣. Now I’ve literally taken away the expectation to be excellent at too many things at the same time because it’s not sustainable at this moment. But I’m doing a good a$$ job of managing me, my marriage, and my child. Having slower mindful moments of self care, touching grass, leaning on prayer, my teas 😉, and just being still is what I’m mastering in this season and I’m hella proud of surrendering to that. Tagged along for the hubby’s work conference and despite the weather, my itinerary with the baby in Newport Beach was so cute 🥰☺️ pendrynewportbeach was 10/10 the accommodations were amazing. They offer guests a complimentary cocktail with a secret password 🤫🥂 and lunch at Viamara was super cute. They gave Ashton a little Pendry Bear and had us set with a crib and diaper pail in the room. We visited a park nearby and Ashton had a time the parks in Newport Beach are really nice 👌🏽 The hotel was a vibe at night too they have live music and the restaurant looked lit. It’s def a cute little date night spot. We opted for room service and chilled, Ashton loved the PBJ sandwich, they had good children’s options for picky eaters 🙌🏽. During the day we went to the nblibrary it has the cutest kids section filled with activities and they were raising butterflies and lady bugs 🐞 🦋🥰 Pleasantly surprised by the Mexican food from chihuahuataproomoc it was bomb bomb shopping fashionisland is top tierrrrrrr. I hated it kept raining on and off 😩 We ended our night with some pastries and a matcha latte from scratchbakerycafe and hung out with some of the hubby’s colleagues before calling it a night. Happy walking out of target buying almost all of the diapers from thehappyhuesco vs the diaper brands at Walmart or other stores. They exclusively sell at Target so until I can buy directly from the website or another retailer I’m gonna clear the shelves. I’ve also been making a point to redirect my necessities to black owned/ founded brands as much as possible. It takes a little bit more time to do but it’s totally worth it especially in this economy. More than half of what you spend with a small black business goes right back into your community.
