We’re 🚫 NOT 🚫 a full time travel family.

My kids are in school, and they play sports which take up many of our weekends! A few other things to know about me:

✨ My husband is a school principal. We HAVE to work around a school schedule. (Otherwise I would be fine with taking the kids out of school for a few days).

✨To fit in travel, we always plan a spring break trip and a longer summer trip. During our summer trip, we always end up missing some sports. We’ve made our peace with that. I also do one-on-one trips with the kids sometimes during the school year so my husband doesn’t have to miss work and the other kids don’t have to miss their important events.

✨ We mostly stick to just school or community sports. We just started dipping our toes into the world of club sports, but we chose a club that didn’t over schedule.

✨ We map out our calendar months in advance so we can schedule the occasional weekend getaway. I’ve even done a 24-hour trip to Washington DC. We’re not afraid to squeeze a lot of travel into a little bit of time.

✨ We’ve also made our peace with summers packed full of travel since that’s when our schedule is the most flexible.

✨ We’re on a budget (4 kids and groceries in this economy?!?) but with my work as a travel creator we’re able to add in worthwhile splurges and even the occasional luxury experience. I love showing how to mix budget and luxury family travel. Save in one category so you can splurge in another.

✨ We occasionally use points and miles to offset the cost of our trips, but that’s not the focus of this account.

✨ We have 4 kids so I love sharing how to make travel work for bigger families that don’t fit in a standard hotel room or rental car.

✨ I love a good old US road trip, a weekend getaway, and an epic international trip. You’ll find so many different types of trips on this page! Theme parks, national parks, big cities, nature, culture, etc.

Any of this sound like something you can relate to? Come follow along amomexplores for travel ideas, itineraries, real life stories, and tips for travel with kids.

I MEAN…WHAT’S NOT TO LOVE?

This is…

📍Savannah + Charleston

The perfect road trip combo!

5-Day Savannah + Charleston Itinerary

This was a multigenerational trip for us with my parents and my 4-year-old, but could easily be adapted to be an adults-only trip, OR a family-friendly trip to Charleston and Savannah with kids.

Day 1:
- early flight to Charleston, rent a car, drive to Savannah, and check in at hotelindigo Savannah.
- Walk the city squares in the historic district or take a hop-on hop-off trolley tour
- See the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist
- City Market for dinner. Dessert at the Baked Bear.

Day 2:
- Brunch at Goose Feathers Cafe
- Forsyth Park for coffee and playground time
- Plant Riverside District to shop, wander, see the cargo ships and river boats. Grab a quick lunch.
- Drive to Wormsloe Historic Site
- Pack up the car and head to Charleston
- Check into embassysuites Charleston Historic District just in time for the manager’s reception. Embassy Suites hotels serve free drinks and snacks every evening!

Day 3:
- 9 a.m. private carriage tour of Historic Charleston
- Take the ferry to Fort Sumpter
- Eat at Gingerline
- Waterfront Park to see the Pineapple Fountain
- Rainbow Row

Day 4:
- Boone Hall Plantation does a great job of teaching about their history of slavery and educating about Gullah culture.
- Angel Oak Tree - very large and old oak tree. Just ok - feel free to skip
- Early dinner at Port of Call back in Charleston
- Sunset walk along the Battery

Day 5:
- Do some shopping at City Market and on King Street
- Grab a quick lunch then head to the airport for a late flight home 2025-09-07 06:04:00 I MEAN…WHAT’S .. 456 -84% 19 -98%
A ✨MAGICAL ✨ DESTINATION ⤵️⤵️⤵️

Comment WAFFLE for my free Belgium travel guide!

Belgium Itinerary 🇧🇪

Day 1 - Arrive in Brussels. We used Welcome Pickups for a private transfer from the airport to our hotel. It cost $62.96, and a car seat was provided.

Stayed overnight at holidayinnexpress Brussels Grand Palace.

Day 2 - Check out, see Grand Place, take the train to Bruges. We arrived in Bruges around 10:30 a.m. and decided to drop our bags off at the hotel.

We stayed at Dukes Academie Bruges, a boutique hotel near Minnewater Lake.

Highlights of Bruges: Market Square (Grote Markt), Quay of the Rosary, climb the Bruges Belfry, Minnewater Lake.

Day 3 - Take a half-hour train ride to Ghent and explore. Highlights: Canal tour, Saint Michael’s Bridge, Castle of the Counts.

Head back to Bruges to stay overnight at Dukes Academie Bruges again.

Day 4 - Check out and take the train to Amsterdam. We stayed at Amsterdam Wiechmann Hotel - we loved the central location along a canal, and the breakfast was included!

Highlights: Flower Market, Fabel Friet (for parmesan fries with truffle mayo), wander the city.

Day 5 - Free breakfast at Amsterdam Wiechmann Hotel.
Anne Frank House (book ahead of time) and Canal Tour in Amsterdam. Eat lots of stroopwafel.

Take the train to Brussels. We stayed at hotelindigo Brussels - we loved the central location of this hotel.

It was an easy walk from the Brussels Nord train station after we took the train from Amsterdam to Brussels.

Day 6 - Day trip to Luxembourg and Dinant booked via GetYour Guide. Return to Hotel Indigo.

Day 7 - Fly home.

The only things I would change if I didn’t have a chance to meet up with a friend and I truly did the whole trip solo with my daughter:

- Skip Amsterdam. Amsterdam felt VERY safe and easy to navigate, BUT taking the train with a stroller and multiple bags and a toddler by yourself is TOUGH. I would limit the amount of travel between destinations.
- Spend extra time in Bruges (felt very safe and easily walkable) and Brussels. I would maybe have taken a kid-friendly walking tour in Brussels! 2025-09-04 19:46:38 .. 209 -93% 140 -82%

WELCOME TO MY ACCOUNT

Where we believe family vacation isn’t just about relaxing on a beach to escape real life (although we like that too sometimes).

Family vacation is a chance to forge your family lore in the fires of type 2 fun.

Family vacation is a chance for everyone to learn to be more adaptable and flexible, where we teach our kids to laugh when everything goes wrong because we can figure it out.

Family vacation is where core memories are made. Memories and inside jokes and quotes we will laugh about until we’re old and gray.

Family vacation is where kids get a chance to show how competent and capable they are - whether it’s helping with the luggage, holding a younger sibling’s hand, trying something new and scary, or learning to navigate public transportation.

If you want to take the kinds of trips that facilitate these values, you’re in the right place! Follow along with my account to learn more, and while you’re here, browse our trip highlights to start dreaming up your next family vacation! 2025-09-03 01:46:01 WELCOME TO MY.. 3 -100% 0 -100%
🌎 5 TWEEN DESTINATIONS ⤵️⤵️

…and why my pre-teens loved them.

Most of these destinations have some element of education because kids at this age still enjoy learning and if they can connect a destination to something they’ve read about or learned in school, it sparks an interest in their brains!

1. Guatemala

Guatemala is full of adventure. My big kids loved zip lining and hiking a volcano, practicing their Spanish, and learning about Tikal - the ancient Mayan ruins. One of my kids was so excited because they had just learned about the sport the Maya used to play, and our tour guide told us all about it on our tour of Tikal.

2. Germany

The kids loved that Germany was a good mix of history (castles, Martin Luther, Berlin Wall, and Dachau concentration camp), outdoor adventure, and bakeries. The Martin Luther sites were great heritage visits, and they were able to connect the medieval towns and castles along with the WWII sites to things they had learned in school.

3. Greece

I read the Percy Jackson series with the older kids before our visit to Greece so they were excited to learn about all the Greek mythology! Also, we’re Milwaukee Bucks fans so they were excited to visit the place where Giannis Antetokounmpo grew up.

4. Scotland

I took my oldest here for her birthday because we’ve been reading the Harry Potter books together since she was little and we got to visit some movie filming spots along with places that inspired JK Rowling as she wrote the series. My daughter was also intrigued by the history of the Jacobite rebellion as well as Mary Queen of Scots.

5. Puerto Rico

It was so cool to visit the only tropical rainforest in the US Forest System, explore the history in Old San Juan, and see some rugged landscapes on the west coast of Puerto Rico. Tweens will also love the bioluminescent bays in Puerto Rico if you get the chance to kayak at night! 2025-09-03 01:01:27 🌎 5 TW.. 135 -95% 7 -99%
KACHOW ⚡️

This is…

Cars Family Suite at Disney’s Art of Animation Resort

Walt Disney World Resort

Sleeps up to 6 people with 1 main bedroom with en suite bathroom, one bed that pulls down from the dining table, and one pull out sofa bed in the living room area.

There are 2 bathrooms: one in the main bedroom with a shower, and one in the living area with a shower/bath (perfect for families with babies and toddlers)!

Includes a kitchenette with a sink, a beverage cooler, a coffee maker, and a decent amount of storage for groceries. There’s a dining table that seats 4.

There was a lot of storage space for clothes! We always use packing cubes, so we were able to pull out the packing cubes and give each person a drawer, plus we had space for a staging area to lay out our outfits for the next day and pack our park day bags.

The Cars area of the hotel has its own pool with Cozy Cone cabanas anyone is free to use - no need to reserve or pay. It’s first come first serve.

There are replicas of the characters from the Cars movies all around, and the’ve made the outside area look like Radiator Springs, even making the sidewalks look like roads.

My boys were OBSESSED with the Cars movies (specifically 1 and 3) when they were little, and we had every line of those movies memorized (Focus. Speed. I am Speed). This was such a nostalgic stay for our family, but I can’t imagine the sheer joy we would have experienced if we had gone when the boys were younger.

This is a Skyliner Resort, and we felt like it wasn’t TOO far of a walk from the Skyline (though everything is kind of a hike at these sprawling resorts). We weren’t TOO far from the main building either.

I absolutely loved our stay here. We had so much space to spread out, and the theming was on point. 10/10 recommend! 2025-08-30 03:05:08 KACHO.. 263 -91% 8 -99%
Tips for Visiting the Romantic Road with Kids

Follow amomexplores for more magical family vacation ideas!

Cities We Visited on the Romantic Road with Kids from North to South:

⭐ Würzburg: this is the start of the Romantic Road and the center of Franconian wine country. This was a larger city that sits on the Main River. Famous landmarks to see here include the Würzburg Residence, the Marienburg Fortress, and the Old Main Bridge.

⭐Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber: this is a small Bavarian town with a well-preserved medieval Old Town. It is one of the most popular stops along the Romantic Road! You’ll recognize the Plönline, the famous photo spot with the yellow half-timbered building and a fountain framed by two towers.

⭐Dinkelsbühl: Another historic Bavarian town with its medieval city walls still intact.

⭐Nördlingen: Another historic Bavarian town with its medieval city walls still intact.

⭐Augsburg: A larger city known for its beautiful architecture and the oldest social housing complex in the world known as the Fuggerei. It has a charming old town, a majestic town hall, and lots of town squares and churches to see.

⭐Füssen: Füssen is a charming small town nestled in the Bavarian Alps, and the last stop on the Romantic Road. The famous fairy tale Neuschwanstein Castle is located just a few minutes outside of town, and Füsen is a great home base for exploring the Bavarian Alps.

⛲ If you like big cities, culture, museums, and the hustle and bustle of a thriving city, prioritize full days in Würzburg and Augsburg.

🥨 If you like quaint small towns, bakeries, half-timbered buildings, and cobblestone streets, prioritize Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber, Dinkelsbühl, and Nördlingen (but you really only need a few hours in Dinkelsbühl and Nördlingen - plan to spend most of your time in Rothenburg).

⛰️ If you like mountains, lakes, nature, castles, and a quaint Bavarian town as a jumping off point for your outdoor sightseeing, prioritize time in Füssen. 2025-08-29 19:53:16 .. 90 -97% 2 -100%

Grocery Shopping Vlog for a family of 6:
ALDI and Target

People ask how we afford to travel so much, and of course the main reason is because it’s my job.

But another factor is that we are pretty frugal in other areas of life. Although I will say it’s getting harder and harder to keep our grocery budget in check with growing kids in sports and the cost of food.

We eat all or our meals at home and usually only go to a restaurant if we have a gift card.

Now that are summer travels are over we are saving up for next spring break and summer vacation!

So here’s a slice of daily life for a family that prioritizes travel in the budget. 2025-08-23 20:40:06 Grocery Shopping Vl.. 140 -95% 10 -99%
Pizza Making Class in Rome!

One of our favorite family-friendly activities in Rome was the pizza making class we took! The class was through eatandwalk_italy which we booked on Viator (Comment PIZZA for a link to the class sent to your inbox)

We had the best time learning about how pizza is made, and we loved that our chef paid special attention to the kids and let them try tossing their dough in the air.

He had us laughing the entire time, and at the end we got to eat the pizza we made from scratch. Plus the grownups got to enjoy a glass of wine and limoncello.

The monuments and history in Rome are incredible, but taking an evening to learn about the rich tradition of cooking was just the low-key experience we needed to keep the kids engaged and happy.

COMMENT “POTTER” TO RECEIVE MY FREE GUIDE TO SCOTLAND WITH KIDS

Here are some of our favorite Harry Potter Experiences in Scotland:

1. Victoria Street - the inspiration for Diagon Alley

2. Magical Afternoon Tea at Department of Magic

3. Greyfriar’s Kirkyard - the cemetery where JK Rowling would go for walks while she was writing the Harry Potter series. She found inspiration for the names of some of her characters from the headstones in the graveyard.

4. FREE Harry Potter walking tour through Edinburgh.

5. Museum Context - a gift shop where you can buy Harry Potter merchandise

6. Elephant House - the original Elephant House is one of the places where JK Rowling is said to have worked on the Harry Potter books. The original was destroyed in a fire, but there is a new venue on Victoria Street where you can buy butterscotch beer (butter beer).

7. JK Rowling’s handprints in Edinburgh

8. Glenfinnan Viaduct - the Hogwarts Express bridge filming location where you can watch the Jacobite Steam Train cross the viaduct.

9. Ride the Hogwarts Express (The Jacobite Steam Train)

10. See Dumbledore’s Grave from the train or visit it in person if you are renting a car. It’s on a small island in the middle of Loch Eilt.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO TO HALLSTATT ⤵️⤵️⤵️

Hallstatt deals with over tourism, so I highly recommend 2 nights in the area. We only stayed one night, and I regretted it. The surrounding areas, like Obertraun, are beautiful, too! Support the local economy, take your time, and try to avoid the day trip crowds midday.

We stayed in nearby Obertraun. Our hotel was called Seehotel Am Hallstättersee and we loved it! We got 2 quad rooms -next to each other but not connecting. They had a wonderful breakfast included in the cost of the hotel, and it’s just a few minutes outside of Hallstatt. Views were incredible.

Things to do in Hallstatt:

📸 take a photo at the iconic panoramic viewpoint at the top of the hill with views of the entire city

🛍️ shop at the souvenir shops

☕️ eat at local cafes. We liked Simple 169, a cafe with incredible Schaumrollen (cream rolls…kind of like a cannoli)

🌺 check out the Market Square - so charming! I grabbed a spot on the bench while some family members were shopping for souvenirs and just took in the view

🦢 Stroll along the waterfront and check out the swans!

🛝 Go to the Spielplatz Hallstättersee which is a playground at the opposite end of town from the panoramic viewpoint. It’s quiet, and it has a great view of the town without all the pushing and shoving crowds.

🚡 You can also take a funicular up to the Hallstatt Skywalk (which we skipped because we were on a budget), but it’s supposed to have amazing views!

How I Packed for a 20+ Hour Road Trip to Disney World with 4 Kids

Anyone else get overstimulated by visual clutter on a road trip and in a hotel room? Me too!

This method helped a lot, especially once we arrived at our resort! It was so easy to keep the hotel room clean with this method.

Here’s how I did it:

🚙 I used 4 bins for 6 people.

- Bin 1: all of the kids’ clothes (4 packing cubes)

- Bin 2: my clothes and my husband’s clothes (2 large packing cubes, 2 small, plus my husband’s miscellaneous items because he’s not as uptight about packing as I am)

- Bin 3: Disney Park Stuff! That includes extra shoes, rain jackets, Mouse Ears (in our ezpacking cube), park bags, spray fans.

- Bin 4: Food items like sandwich bags, cutlery, cutting board and our trusty Cutco knife for cutting fruit, paper towel (didn’t need - the Art of Animation Room had some!), snacks, protein powder, shaker bottles, and more.

🚙 I also included 1 overnight bag with pajamas and 1 outfit per person so we could leave the bins in the trunk while we stayed overnight on the drive down. If you’re not comfortable leaving bins in the car you can definitely bring them in and out.

🚙 I packed all of our family’s toiletries in the calpak Luka duffel bag (one of my all time favorite travel bags) AND I had the toiletries in a plastic bin inside the bag so I could keep our bathroom counter at Disney neat and clutter-free.

Surprisingly, these bins fit under the bed in the main bedroom in our Art of Animation suite so we unpacked the packing cubes in drawers for the week and slid the bins out of sight. 2025-08-13 00:50:41 .. 1,000 -65% 33 -96%
Comment “NYC” to get my free travel guide to visiting NYC at Christmas with kids!

I decided to take a quick 48-hour trip to New York City this past December to get one last trip out of my southwestair Companion Pass which expired at the end of the year.

I took just my 4-year-old this time since my other kids had school and sports, but I’m already planning a return trip next year to bring more of the kids because we loved it so much!

We stayed at the holidayinnexpress Times Square South because it was one of the more affordable last-minute booking options and served free continental breakfast.

Here are some of the best things to do and see in NYC with kids during the Christmas season:

🎄Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree
✨Bryant Park Winter Village
🎅🏼FAO Schwarz
🎼 See the Rockettes at the Radio City Christmas Spectacular
⛸️ Go Ice Skating at Wollman Rink in Central Park
🍫Get the fancy hot chocolate from the S’mores N’more stand at the Bryant Park Winter Village
✨Window Shop on 5th Avenue
🎄New York Public Library
🚂 Go to the New York Transit Museum located in Grand Central Terminal to see the Holiday Train Show.
🎄Eat at Papillon Bistro to see the crazy Christmas decorations!

There’s definitely more to do, but this is what we were able to fit in with a day and a half, a stroller, and rainy weather.

I’ll definitely be back for more!
