Kaneko-San is the 8th and last generation craftsman of Japanese spinning tops in Oyama. I feel so lucky to have met him and had the chance to learn about the craft. He was so warm and welcoming with an infectious positive energy.

Oyama is a small mountain town with a mix of tradition, nature, and food that makes it really special. It’s only 90 minutes away from Tokyo, but it feels like another world. ⛩️

After trying our hand at the spinning top (it’s harder than it looks!!) and strolling down the spinning top street, which had us feeling like we teleported to Showa Japan, we rode the cable car up Mt. Oyama to Afuri Shrine, a sacred spot overlooking sweeping views.

One of my absolute favorite moments was stopping at Teahouse Sekison (茶寮 石尊), which is part of the shrine. The tea house was designed by a famous Japanese architect! Sitting above the clouds with a matcha tiramisu in hand was such a magical experience, it’s the kind of place where you just want to pause the moment and keep it forever.

The tours also give you the chance to walk part of an old pilgrimage route, and taste Oyama’s famous tofu. If you join the overnight tour, you’ll stay in a traditional Japanese inn, soak in an open-air bath, and even join a lecture about Noh theater. In the morning there will be a Shinto prayer session followed by a mindful calligraphy experience too!

🗓 Tour dates this Fall 2026:
October 8~9, 2025 (Wednesday)
October 20~21, 2025 (Monday)
October 27~28, 2025 (Monday)

We got to meet a local Japanese spinning top craftsmen who showed us his workshop and told us about the history of his craft. The Japanese top is more than just a toy, it’s a tradition that holds a lot of symbolism. The longer your top spins the longer your life and your luck! 🍀

Before moving to Tokyo, I lived in Kyoto for 2 years, so coming back for sightseeing felt really special. ✨ As an introvert, I always try to avoid the crowds but still make the most of my trip. This time, I explored some hidden gems while styling my day with pearl jewelry from WSP Kyoto Shijo (store_wsp) 💎

Stops on my Kyoto day trip:
1st Stop: The Terminal Kyoto
An art gallery + café in one! 🎨☕ The gallery is free to enter, and they have beautiful pottery pieces available for purchase. I went right when it opened at 9:30am and had the whole place to myself.

2nd Stop: Roots 2 Riverside Café
A quiet riverside gem, perfect for relaxing. I ordered the spiced curry, a matcha latte, and a dango set—everything was delicious! Afterward, I strolled down by the river with my latte in hand.

3rd Stop: Kifune Shrine
One of my favorite shrines in Kyoto. 🌿 Famous for its water fortunes that reveal your luck when placed in the stream. Mine was just “吉” (average luck), so I tied it up and moved on.

4th Stop: Sagenta River Cafe (near Kifune)
Most of the river cafes in this area are pricey, and require reservations, but I walked a bit further up and found a hidden spot that seated me right away! I had their yuba (tofu skin) rice bowl, which is my Kyoto favorite!

✨ Jewelry I wore (from MARLENA, available at WSP):

Lian Earrings

Mirage Earrings (black pearl & freshwater pearl)

Rectangle Pendant

Martine Necklace
If you’re in Kyoto, definitely check out WSP Kyoto for pearls you can style every day. Which of these Kyoto spots would you visit first? 🌸

If you’re looking for a unique and timeless souvenir that you can cherish forever, you can find the perfect one at 📍store_wsp in Kyoto.

I’ve always loved how pearls are such a big part of Japanese culture, and WSP takes it a step further by making beautiful, modern pearl jewelry that you can wear every day. My absolute favorite piece was this gorgeous Fleur Eclat Akoya Pearl Flower necklace with the matching bracelet and earrings. It’s a perfect way to remember your trip!

If you’re ever in Kyoto, this shop is a must visit. You can find the perfect piece to treat yourself or a loved one to something special.

Inside a 100 year old teahouse in the backstreets of Kyoto, every detail of Oboro invites you to slow down.

Soft candlelight flickers against traditional walls. The scent of tatami and incense linger in the air. You’ll be welcomed with a seasonal sweet and tea.

The heart of the ceremony involves matcha, prepared with care and intention. Here you’re invited to be present, to listen to the sound of water pouring, the whisper of the bamboo whisk, the stillness between each gesture.

Oboro is more than a tea ceremony. It’s a kind of meditation, a reminder that intention lives in silence, in ritual, in the spaces between words. 🍵

I could’ve stared at the panoramic views from our hotel balcony all day. Not pictured in the video, the night views were insane too! We had the most fun and peaceful getaway at the Nagasaki Marriott Hotel~

The design of the hotel reminded me of a luxury cruise ship. It was clean and modern but still warm and had amazinggg panoramic views of the ocean and Nagasaki’s city lights right from our room’s balcony.

Our room was spacious and comfortable, with lots of natural light and thoughtful interior touches. I also loved spotting all the local artwork throughout the hotel.
⁡
For dinner, we had a course meal using local Nagasaki ingredients with a French twist, it felt like a special treat. And breakfast the next morning was a colorful and delicious buffet with so many options! The food and drink selection in the exclusive lounge (M CLUB) was really good too. It was so nice to be able to choose from a variety of teas and cakes after dinner~

I highly recommend this hotel if you’re staying in Nagasaki, the location was so convenient right next to the station.

Did you know Japan’s most premium green tea comes from a small city in Fukuoka? 🍵✨

📍Yame City is especially famous for Gyokuro, the rarest and most luxurious type of Japanese green tea. What makes Gyokuro unique is the way it’s grown: the tea plants are carefully shaded about 20 days before harvest. In Yame, this is still done the traditional way, with straw mats instead of modern plastic covers. The straw covers allow for a softer, filtered light which slows down photosynthesis, letting the leaves hold onto more theanine. The result is a deep sweetness, rich umami, and almost no bitterness, flavors that tea lovers around the world treasure. 🌿

If you’re in Yame City, I recommend checking out the tea tasting experience at 📍Kiya Hoyu-en (Seisuian_kiya.horyouen) Here you can taste Gyokuro in all kinds of creative ways by eating it and even sparkling green tea! 🫧 It’s truly a must-visit for any tea lover exploring Japan. 🇯🇵

What I found here at 📍Root2 Riverside was a little world of calm, where the gentle flow of the Kiyotaki River meets dishes made with fresh, local ingredients. Every bite, whether it’s the spiced curry, or their subtly sweet house-made dango tells the story of the surrounding countryside of Kyoto.

If you visit try your best to blend in with the peace of the area by keeping your voices low and of course always take trash home with you if you go down by the river~

Yame City in Fukuoka is a GOLDMINE for traditional Japanese crafts! 🌿

Here you can meet local artisans who have been mastering their craft for generations, try your hand at their workshops, and even stay in a hotel that’s basically a work of art itself. Plus, they have amazing tea! 🍵✨

📍Chopstick or brooch making experience using traditional gold leaf and lacquer decorating: Lacquer studio Iwaya (Urushikoubou.iwaya)
📍Japanese Sewing experience: Nomura Textiles (Nomuraorimono)
📍Lantern making Experience: Shiraki Crafts (shirakikougei_)
📍Knife making Experience: Morihiro Blacksmith Factory (hocho-morihiro.com)

Yame City is also famous for green tea. If you visit you should try the tea tasting experience at 📍Kiya Hoyu-en (Seisuian_kiya.horyouen)

Not pictured in the video, but in the town there’s also a tea tasting experience at 📍Kiya Hoyu-en (seisuian_kiya.horyouen) and a Strawberry picking experience where you can have the whole strawberry field to yourself at 📍Winnie The Pooh’s Strawberry Farm (Pusannoichigo)

Where to stay: Nipponia (Nipponia_yamefukushima)

This station is said to have inspired the train scene in Spirited Away (千と千尋), and standing there, I could definitely see it.

I think it might be the most beautiful train station I’ve seen in Japan. I don’t know if the sunset is always like that, or if we just happened to catch a moment, but it truly felt magical.

You don’t need a ticket to enter the stations there were a few people there just taking photos. I also saw online that there’s a cafe in the old waiting room of the station but it wasn’t open when we were there so I’m not totally sure about that.

I actually tried posting about this station a few times but it didn’t get any views so I’m giving it a go again in this ✨viral✨ format, but to be honest this is my least favorite way to post videos. I prefer to post longer/more thoughtful content about special places like this, but the reality is those videos don’t capture the attention that’s needed to get views and if I don’t get views I don’t get work. Lately I’ve been thinking of starting a separate account where I can post longer more meaningful videos without having to worry about view count. What do you guys think? What would you do?

Today we took the van up to Okutama 🌿
There’s so much to do and see here for outdoors people, it’s the perfect place to see Tokyo’s nature side.

🚣‍♂️There’s a few different companies that offer river rafting adventures here, you can find a good one with a quick google search. I didn’t do it this time but I have done it once last summer and it’s really fun! (I don’t remember which company I used 🙇🏻‍♀️)

Just walking around the area is nice too with all of the river and flower views. My personal favorite though are the riverside cafes. Theres a few in the area with different offerings but my favorite (pictured in the video) is 📍Shizu Cafe. This area is famous for tofu so they have a tofu cheesecake and iced soy latte that I get every time 🍰

The cafe is part of the sake brewery where you can do sake tasting and a try a few other local foods. I got the tofu and it was really good!🍶✨

I was map surfing around a nature spot in Tokyo when I came across this one. It’s the “sound of water” terrace cafe at 📍Kurochaya located in Akiruno, Tokyo. The terrace is right above a stretch of river of the Iwasekyo Gorge.

Kurochaya is an old style Japanese restaurant housed built in a centuries old farmhouse. i treated myself to a blueberry yogurt shake and ice cream parfait. It was good but I was mostly there for the views and the playing in the river afterwards.

If you’ve ever dreamed of waking up to a full-on view of Mt. Fuji, this is the place.

📍Fumotoppa (ふもとっぱ)is a Fuji view campsite in Yamanashi prefecture that’s locally famous for its views of Mt. Fuji from anywhere on the campsite.

It’s a super chill site with wide open fields, clean facilities, and zero bad angles of the mountain. There was also an onsen free to use on the site. ♨️

We made coffee, roasted marshmallows, watched the clouds roll over Fuji, and just… slowed down for once.

We went during rainy season so the views of Mt. Fuji were fleeting. If you want a real amazing view like in the AI clips, I recommend going in the Spring or Fall when the skies are more clear.

Definitely bring a good blanket though it gets cold at night!

This trip was such a nice escape from Tokyo and it was only a 2 hour flight away~

🌊 The beaches and ocean views are everywhere, you don’t have to go far to find a peaceful spot.

🍵 You can see tea fields and the ocean at the same time in Higashi Sonogi. It’s the only place in Japan where you can see this scene!

🏨 I woke up to a full view of Nagasaki city and the sea from my room at nagasakimarriott. The room itself was really nice too and had a big luxurious bath in the room. Check out my previous reel to see the whole thing~

🍜 And the food... Nagasaki’s got such a cool mix of Japanese and international flavors. I had Nagasaki Chanpon for the first time. All of the food pictured in this video was from the Marriott, they had expert Nagasaki chefs preparing local food!

Would totally go back.

Tucked inside Ginza SIX is a dessert omakase rooted in memory, seasonality, and intention.

Chef Tamura, once trained in a Michelin starred French kitchen, began this journey with the intention to recreate the joy of his mother’s homemade birthday cheesecake. Not perfection or chasing stars, but a feeling.

At Mr. CHEESECAKE, that feeling is expressed through 室礼 (shitsurai), the Japanese art of setting the scene with care and intention.

First course was Kanagawa watermelon (sourced from the Chef’s hometown) topped with kojiso blossoms. 2nd was a deconstructed cheesecake with tonka bean, lemon, paired with a tea blended just for this course. Third Wass a coffee-scented mizuyokan, which evoked the essence of tiramisu.
The finale was 音律 (onritsu), a freshly baked Basque cheesecake served warm, its timing and temperature finely tuned like music.

Not only the desserts, but the environment was also crafted with intention. It’s simple and minimalistic in a Japanese way, not to distract from the food experience itself. Even the table, crafted by Japanese furniture maker Karimoku, plays its part. This is more than dessert. It’s a story told in four courses. The menu changes seasonally, so I’ll definitely be back for the Fall~

I’m often asked why I moved to Japan, but there’s not one real answer. It’s more of a chain of events that unfolded over a few years, so I wanted to share that with you here.

In my early 20s, I was living in New York, where I was born and raised, feeling untethered and unsure of where I belonged.

Things started to shift when I enrolled in culinary school in 2017 and found purpose in creating vegan food. I fell in love with Japanese ingredients like shiitake, yuzu, and konbu. These umami ingredients are great for making flavorful vegan food, like did you know the secret ingredient to the best vegan Mac & cheese is miso paste?

Anyway, I thought I should probably visit the country where these ingredients I used everyday came from, so I booked my first trip to Japan in 2018.

I started learning Japanese to prepare for my trip. I took classes twice a week after work at the Japan Language Society of New York & then at the Terri Cultural Center. Studying Japanese became my hobby.

With a little Japanese under my belt I went to all of the usual places that tourists go: Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, but I also made sure to go somewhere special too. I joined a yoga retreat in Oita that really made my fall in love with the countryside of Japan.

The calm of the countryside with the little hidden shrines in every corner, the warmth of the people there, the sprawling nature everywhere all really resonated with me.

Back in NYC, Japan stayed on my mind, so I returned here in 2019 and didn’t want to leave. One adventure led to another, until I found myself living in Kochi on Shikoku, teaching English and learning who I really was outside of the bubble I had lived in my who life.

A year turned into many. I studied Japanese in Kyoto, worked at a teashop through the stillness of the pandemic,
and eventually moved to Tokyo to create content full time, merging work with the places and stories I love most.

Now, nearly 5 years later, I’m still here.
Still exploring.

Still chasing that mix of peace, purpose, and belonging I first felt in the Japanese countryside.

Thanks for following along on this journey. If you feel called to share your story or anything, I’d love to hear it 🍃✨ 2025-07-25 19:30:00 .. 4,786 +492% 201 +653%

I tried the classic Monaka Jumbo for the first time and wow—now I get why it’s so popular 🍨🍫

Crispy wafer on the outside, creamy vanilla ice cream, and a thick layer of chocolate in the center = perfection.

Pro tip: pop it in the toaster for just 30 seconds! I know it sounds weird (it’s ice cream, right? 😅), but trust me—the outside gets warm and crispy while the inside stays soft, with that crunchy chocolate layer in the middle. So good!!

You can find it at pretty much any convenience store in Japan for around 150 yen.

I saw a post by my favorite Norway based creator rachel.pohl that resonated a lot— she talked about being the “always welcome but rarely invited” friend, and it hit home in a way that put into words how I’ve always felt.

It’s wild how a few words can make you feel seen. Her post made me feel less alone, so I wanted to share my own version of it.

I’ve often felt like the one who’s somehow on the outside of the group text. Not because I don’t love people or connection, but because I’ve always had different interests than those around me and I find it hard to keep up with the constant texting that seems necessary these days to keep strong friendships. I know that’s part on me because I have yet to make the effort to find a like minded community. (I’m trying though and just signed up for a tea class next week! 🍵)

I’ve come to find peace in being my own first choice though. I still deeply value friendship and community, but I’m learning not to put my happiness on hold waiting for an invitation.
Letting go of that is what gave me the courage to move abroad and start a life in Japan that I truly love and that feels authentic to me.

So this post is for anyone who’s felt like they don’t quite fit. Who are loved, but not always thought of. Who are included, but not prioritized.
