- I tried the classic Monaka Jumbo for the first time and wow—now I get why it’s so popular 🍨🍫 Crispy wafer on the outside, creamy vanilla ice cream, and a thick layer of chocolate in the center = perfection. Pro tip: pop it in the toaster for just 30 seconds! I know it sounds weird (it’s ice cream, right? 😅), but trust me—the outside gets warm and crispy while the inside stays soft, with that crunchy chocolate layer in the middle. So good!! You can find it at pretty much any convenience store in Japan for around 150 yen. Have you tried this trick before? 🔥🍦 #MonakaJumbo #JapaneseSnacks #ConvenienceStoreEats #JapanEats
- I’m often asked why I moved to Japan, but there’s not one real answer. It’s more of a chain of events that unfolded over a few years, so I wanted to share that with you here. In my early 20s, I was living in New York, where I was born and raised, feeling untethered and unsure of where I belonged. Things started to shift when I enrolled in culinary school in 2017 and found purpose in creating vegan food. I fell in love with Japanese ingredients like shiitake, yuzu, and konbu. These umami ingredients are great for making flavorful vegan food, like did you know the secret ingredient to the best vegan Mac & cheese is miso paste? Anyway, I thought I should probably visit the country where these ingredients I used everyday came from, so I booked my first trip to Japan in 2018. I started learning Japanese to prepare for my trip. I took classes twice a week after work at the Japan Language Society of New York & then at the Terri Cultural Center. Studying Japanese became my hobby. With a little Japanese under my belt I went to all of the usual places that tourists go: Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, but I also made sure to go somewhere special too. I joined a yoga retreat in Oita that really made my fall in love with the countryside of Japan. The calm of the countryside with the little hidden shrines in every corner, the warmth of the people there, the sprawling nature everywhere all really resonated with me. Back in NYC, Japan stayed on my mind, so I returned here in 2019 and didn’t want to leave. One adventure led to another, until I found myself living in Kochi on Shikoku, teaching English and learning who I really was outside of the bubble I had lived in my who life. A year turned into many. I studied Japanese in Kyoto, worked at a teashop through the stillness of the pandemic, and eventually moved to Tokyo to create content full time, merging work with the places and stories I love most. Now, nearly 5 years later, I’m still here. Still exploring. Still chasing that mix of peace, purpose, and belonging I first felt in the Japanese countryside. Thanks for following along on this journey. If you feel called to share your story or anything, I’d love to hear it 🍃✨
- I saw a post by my favorite Norway based creator rachel.pohl that resonated a lot— she talked about being the “always welcome but rarely invited” friend, and it hit home in a way that put into words how I’ve always felt. It’s wild how a few words can make you feel seen. Her post made me feel less alone, so I wanted to share my own version of it. I’ve often felt like the one who’s somehow on the outside of the group text. Not because I don’t love people or connection, but because I’ve always had different interests than those around me and I find it hard to keep up with the constant texting that seems necessary these days to keep strong friendships. I know that’s part on me because I have yet to make the effort to find a like minded community. (I’m trying though and just signed up for a tea class next week! 🍵) I’ve come to find peace in being my own first choice though. I still deeply value friendship and community, but I’m learning not to put my happiness on hold waiting for an invitation. Letting go of that is what gave me the courage to move abroad and start a life in Japan that I truly love and that feels authentic to me. So this post is for anyone who’s felt like they don’t quite fit. Who are loved, but not always thought of. Who are included, but not prioritized. You’re not alone 💛
