Confidence isn’t about doing everything perfectly in life.

In fact, it isn’t about the result at all.

Instead, it is all about the way you talk to yourself and the way you guide yourself through different situations.

Think about it this way:

When a confident person does well in a certain task, they will celebrate and be proud of what they achieved. However, when things go differently than expected or they “fail” at something, they will still be supportive of themselves because they know that it is okay to make mistakes and that their self-worth isn’t dependent on this result, so they learn and move on.

If you feel insecure about something, no matter the result, you will keep doubting yourself.
When you do well, you wonder if it was a coincidence or that people might say different things behind your back. 
When you (in your eyes) fail, you see it as a confirmation that you indeed aren’t good enough.

Now you see that being confident isn’t about being perfect in life and doing everything super well. It is all about how you hold yourself. What is your self-talk like, how do you see yourself, and how do you learn from different situation?💭

Finding balance and feeling more rested, energised, and in control is not only about setting boundaries and taking more breaks. It is also about your ability to switch off, fully relax, and actually enjoy your free time.

👉🏼Maybe you leave the office or close your laptop every day proudly at 5 pm, but you constantly check your email and messages throughout the evening. Even though you might not reply until the next morning, you don’t give your mind a break to truly switch off from work.

👉🏼You might go to a workout or yoga class after work, but if your mind is still going over work things and all the things you need to get done, you will not feel truly grounded and relaxed.

👉🏼Or when you have some time off, you notice you keep yourself constantly busy, whether it is by using every single free moment to pick up your phone and scroll through the news or social media or whether you keep listening to podcasts or nonfiction ebooks that you love - your brain stays on and you are not allowing yourself to unwind.

To bring back that sense of balance that you are *actually* craving, it is important to 
1) optimise your time & energy management so that there is more space in your life to switch off
2) train your ability to switch off so that you can actually use your free time (even those mini moments during the day) to switch off and recharge

For many of us, December is a busy month - whether there is a lot of work that needs to be finished by the end of the year or you have many Christmas parties and social events going on - it is a lot.​​​​​​​​

And often the first things we let go of is taking care of ourselves which (let's be honest) makes everything feels even more overwhelming & draining…😴​​​​​​​​

Here are a few tips:​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
• Create a clear overview of work & personal life things that are going on so you know exactly what is going on.​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
• Block some time for yourself and plan it in your calendar. Depending on how much you thrive by social events or whether you need more alone time, block some time for yourself during this month to stay connected to yourself & protect your energy.​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
• Identify your self-care non-negotiables and commit to them. Maybe you do not have time for your full morning and evening rituals, but that doesn't mean you have to completely neglect yourself. Identify some small self-care steps that are easy to implement during busy days and while travelling.​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
• For your work tasks, get clear on your priorities for this month. For everything that is not a priority, can you put it on your nice-to-get-done list, ask for help, or completely delete it? ​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
• What do you want to do this month for you? Are there some Christmas markets you would like to visit, some movies to watch, or would you like to go ice skating? Whatever it is, make sure you do something that makes YOU happy this month.​​​​​​​​

How to set yourself up for success🙌🏼🤩

Setting yourself up for success is a term I often use myself and in coaching sessions with my clients.

To me it means the things you can prepare, the things you are in control of, to make yourself feel better, more productive, more creative - whatever it is you are looking for.

It means taking full responsibility for your own life and wellbeing and implementing small action steps that will allow you to show up as your best self.

Setting yourself up for success can look like many different things, for me some examples would be:

• Making sure I am unwinding before I go to bed to have a good night of sleep, and a good night of sleep is in itself also a way to set myself up for success as it helps me to feel energised and in a better mood all day. 

• Using all my productivity & focus tools when I need to get some work done, so I can get more done in less time.

• When I work on something creative, I have learned that sitting behind a laptop isn’t the best place for me to get into a creative mood. So instead I set myself up for success (for a creative work session) by changing my environment - maybe going for a walk or to a cafe and grabbing pen and paper to take notes. 

• Starting my day with a morning routine, including habits & rituals that make me feel my best that day and not opening any social media apps to make sure I can start my day feeling focused and in a great mood!

You know those days when you finish work and then you have to rush to your workout class, followed by going to the supermarket to buy groceries to make dinner, and having to catch up on all messages you missed during the day or maybe even meeting up with a friend. ​​​​​​​​

Sometimes we get so stuck in this “I have to”, “I must”, and “I should” way of thinking that the things that we actually have chosen to spend our time on now feel like an obligation.​​​​​​​​

You see, you are in charge of your free time. If you don’t like how you spend it, of course, go ahead and change some things so it is more aligned with your values and what is important to you.​​​​​​​​

👉🏼 you promise yourself to take more breaks during the day, but the reality is a lot needs to get done and you convince yourself all these tasks are more important than time for yourself. 

👉🏼 you plan to finally start the book you have been wanting to read, go out for a beautiful autumn walk, or meditate but instead, you find yourself scrolling on social media.

👉🏼 you have this big goal you want to achieve or a passion project you would love to work on, yet you find it so hard to find the motivation to get started and you just keep procrastinating. 

… You keep trying new strategies or trying to implement new habits that might work this time. The thing is, as long as you don’t address the underlying problem, you will keep experiencing the same obstacles.

You see, it's all about the relationship you have with yourself. You have to build self-trust to find that level of self-discipline that will help you achieve all your goals & implement the healthy routines and habits you have been desiring to fit into your lifestyle.👏🏼💫

So unless you work on connecting deeper with yourself and improving the relationship with yourself, you will find yourself procrastinating, self-sabotaging, and getting frustrated with yourself.

I have been reflecting on my personal experience as well as my clients’ experiences and I feel like there are two common themes here that might explain why we experience this paradox of free time. 

1️⃣ addiction to stress - your body & mind are so used to you experiencing stress that they actually prefer that state of being (even though you do not enjoy it at all). This means that whenever you are having some time for yourself, your mind will start giving you thoughts to take action upon to get you in that stress state again. You might find yourself worrying about the smallest things or just find it impossible to fully relax even when you don’t have to do anything else.

2️⃣ not knowing what you value and love doing outside of work - the time you have outside of work is often just to do some groceries, cook, do some house chores, catching up on WhatsApp and Netflix. So whenever you have some extra free time, you just don’t know what you enjoy doing just for fun - not to be productive or achieve a certain thing, but just to enjoy life and take care of yourself. 

So to be fully able to enjoy your free time, you need to learn how to calm your nervous system and break the addiction to stress, as well as figure out what you value in life and intentionally spend your time. I believe that once you work on these two blocks, you will notice a huge improvement in your fulfilment & wellbeing because you can actually recharge and spend your time doing more things that make you happy.👏🏼💛

Optimising your work-life integration is not only about the practical steps of setting boundaries and creating more intentional free time for yourself. It is also about learning to manage your mind. 👏🏼

You see, you can close your laptop and go to a yoga class, cook for yourself, and enjoy a self-care night, but if you constantly keep thinking about work, your ever-growing to-do list, and worry about things in the past and future, the impact of your free time will feel a lot different than when you can be fully present with yourself and truly unwind.

Only when you are able to be present with yourself, intentionally enjoy your free time, and detach yourself from work or other responsibilities and worries, you are able to feel so much more relaxed, recharged, and inspired.
