👎 Sustainability gatekeeping is real, and it’s killing innovation!
•
😔 The ugly truth is some of the most groundbreaking sustainable packaging is currently being gatekept
•
🚫 It’s not the innovators holding back, it’s big brands buying exclusivity
•
🔒Essentially locking out every other brand, especially the indie brands trying to access sustainable packaging
•
💸 For the big brands, it’s a flex - a way to differentiate themselves from competitors
•
😒 But it comes at a cost and keeps smaller brands continuing to be priced out of sustainable innovation
•
👉 Because at the end of the day, the MORE brands that adopt a sustainable package design or material, the more cost effective it is for the entire industry AND the more price point accessible sustainability becomes for consumers
•

🤷‍♀️ Someone had to say it...
•
🌍 Brands love to roll out refill systems because they think it makes them look more sustainable in the eyes of consumers
•
🚨 But here’s the problem - a lot of refillable packaging actually creates more waste than standard single use packaging
•
👉For example, bottle-in-a-bottle refill systems require consumers to purchase a fancy keepsake component once, then swap in refill pods or cartridges when they need to replenish
•
😒 Which sounds more sustainable on paper, but unless a product has insanely high repurchase rate, most consumers drop off after a few refills....
•
#️⃣ Meaning they never reach the refill quantity needed to 2025-09-30 07:45:32 .. 2,914 +8% 68 -6%
⚠️🚨Scam alert...
•
♻️So many brands are focused on ensuring their packaging is made from recyclable materials...
•
🫠Which is well intentioned, however recycling (especially here in the US!) is far more complicated
•
🔍So often they overlook one packaging details that impact recyclability - such as black plastic
•
👉When black plastic enters sorting/recycling facilities, the infrared technology used to identify and sort the different plastics cannot 2025-09-24 07:01:36 .. 11,149 +313% 90 +25%
👀Let's talk about soy-based inks...
•
🌱Soy-based inks are often touted as the greener choice for unit cartons because they reduce volatile organic compounds and are partially bio-based
•
🏭And while it’s true they reduce reliance on fossil fuels, the farming, refining, and processing of soy oil is energy-intensive
•
👉Meaning soy inks often have a higher carbon footprint than traditional inks
•
💁‍♀️And that’s the bigger point - the sustainability of a unit carton isn’t just about whether the paperboard can be recycled
•
💡It’s also about how the raw materials are processed, how the inks and coatings are manufactured, and even how those cartons are shipped and distributed
•
🌎Remember, sustainability buzzwords are only a small part of the story...The big picture is what really matters when assessing environmental impact!

👀👉 Did you know....
•
🧴Drop testing is actually a real part of cosmetic packaging development?
•
🤭 Brands literally drop products from different heights, angles and surfaces to see what survives before launch
•
😊 So when your serum or compact doesn’t break after hitting the bathroom floor, it’s not luck...it’s engineering
•
🤔 But what about when a product shatters during drop testing?
•
🤷‍♀️Well, it still might launch, as some components like glass jars and bottles are just inherently more prone to breakage
•
👉 However, sometimes brands will add additional protection for the product, such as a thicker unit carton board or liner
•
🤦‍♀️ I’m super clumsy, so I always think about this part of testing
•
💭What’s the last product you dropped… and did it survive?😂

🤯 The most exciting sustainability breakthrough in beauty packaging...and it feels like no one is talking about it
•
🤩 Meet PHA - yes, it’s technically a plastic, but a very different kind
•
🚫 Traditional plastics are fossil fuel based and rarely recycled
•
🌱 But PHA is a family of bio-resins made from renewable feedstocks, like algae and seaweed (no fossil fuels!)
•
🌿 Even better, it’s compostable in industrial conditions, which eliminates its reliance on end of life recycling (which as we know, often falls short!)
•
👀 Now there's still work that needs to be done behind the scenes before PHA can start replacing traditional plastics on a large scale...
•
🙌 But the potential of PHA is absolutely massive!
•
✨ If you’re a beauty brand curious about PHA, let’s talk!

👀 Clarins Double Serum looks like a LOT of packaging...because it is!
•
👉 But there’s a reason
•
✌️ This bottle actually holds two serums (one water-based, one oil-based) kept in separate chambers
•
💡Clarins developed this with Aptar, one of the top pump suppliers in the world, and together they created a patented dual-chamber system
•
👨‍🏭👩‍🏭 It’s brilliant engineering, but it’s also basically two bottles in one - so a LOT of plastic
•
🧠 This is where my packaging brain goes - how can we make this package more sustainable?
•
♻️ To be clear, Clarins uses recycled content in the PET parts of this component innovation (which is good👍)
•
😬 But regardless, that's a lot of plastic...
•
💄 When I consult with brands on their product packaging and sustainability strategy, we focus heavily on balancing innovation, measurable sustainability, formula efficacy and consumer experience...
•
💁‍♀️ Which as you can tell from the Double Serum example, is often no easy task!
•
•
•
💗Thank you chloemorello for asking for a review on this package!

👀 Brands - you’ve got to read the room...
•
🫠 Louis Vuitton just launched a $160 refillable lipstick, and in this economy, it's giving out of touch
•
🤨 It's noticeably more expensive (by nearly 3 times!!) than competing luxury brands, like Prada and Gucci...causing even luxury beauty lovers to raise an eyebrow
•
💄 Yes, this component is premium - we're talking an aluminum shell, brass detailing, magnetic closure, and refillable engineering
•
🤯 Since LV produces all their cosmetic packaging in Europe, we can estimate this component costs around $10–$16...which is incredibly expensive for cosmetic packaging
•
👉 However, it's not the premium packaging driving the retail price, its the perception and positioning
•
💰 And unfortunately for LV, in this economy and especially amongst young consumers, this lipsticks price tag is being perceived as nothing more than a logo tax
•
💄 Beauty brands, if you're going to invest in premium packaging and luxury market positioning, you have to tie that premium price tag to a bigger purpose
•
🌎 Sustainability, social impact, or real innovation are what make a high price feel justified, not just the logo
•
•
•

👀 The FDA isn’t playing with whipped sunscreens...
•
🛑 Warning letters went out to Vacation, Supergoop and others because whipped mousse sunscreens are not an FDA-approved dosage form under the OTC monograph
•
🧴 However, the fluffy mousse-like texture isn't created by the formula as much as it is by the packaging!
•
👉The pressurized metal canister and valve system is what creates the unique whipped texture - without it, you’d just have a standard cream
•
🤯 That means packaging isn’t just a container here, it’s actively transforming the product into a dosage form the FDA doesn’t recognize!
•
🫠 In the beauty industry’s rush for novelty and virality, regulation often gets sidelined, despite their vital importance
•
💡This is also why it's so important to understand the full impact your packaging has on your product- it's so much more than a vessel, it impacts costs, shapes consumer perception, and in this case, determines FDA compliance
•

🫠🫠🫠 This is so frustrating....
•
✋️A growing number of US recycling facilities are no longer accepting glass
•
🛑 For years, beauty brands have switched from plastic to glass, thinking it’s the more sustainable choice
•
📍 But in some counties/cities, including those in Virginia, Arizona, Washington, Georgia and Pennsylvania, glass has been BANNED from curbside recycling....
•
❓️Why?? There's multiple reasons, however they all boil down to glass not being considered profitable for some facilities, despite it being infinitely recyclable
•
🔄 If glass isn’t recycled at end of life, we lose material circularity, and that glass jar or bottle ends up going to a landfill with the rest of the packaging
•
♻️ In this case, beauty brands and beauty consumers are trying to reduce our environmental footprint
•
‼️But without the systems and infrastructure (like recycling facilities) to support it, our intentions and actions never translate into real environmental impact

👉 Sustainability is not just for the rich...
•
👀And yet somehow, the beauty industry keeps selling it like it is
•
😔When did sustainability stop being about real-world environmental impact, and start being a luxury lifestyle only the elite can afford?
•
🫠Here’s the irony:
Sustainability is being positioned as a luxury,
when in reality, it’s the wealthiest people and corporations who generate the most waste
•
👉On the flip side, communities considered low-income tend to waste far less
•
🌎 Because here’s the thing, waste isn’t just an environmental issue, it's an economic one
•
💰If you have a fixed budget, you don’t have the privilege to waste ... not economically, and often not environmentally either.
•
💲Look, I get that sustainable innovation can come at a cost
•
🤷‍♀️But so much of what we call “sustainable beauty” today is an aspirational image, not a genuine impact

Consumers are getting suspicious 👀
•
🔍 Between rising inflation and the economic recession, US consumers are becoming more and more astute when it comes to assessing the value of their favorite beauty products
•
🤨 And one thing they've been discovering is that their favorite beauty products don’t actually contain as much product as they thought.
•
👉 Why, you ask? Packaging size impression.
•
🫠 Packaging size impression refers to when a package is designed in a way that makes you think you’re getting more bang for your buck....when really you're just getting more packaging
•
🤓 Which is why it's so important to always read the fill size, and not base the value or amount of product based off the size of the component
•
💭 But I want to hear from you! As a beauty consumers, do you mind oversized packaging, or does it feel a little bit dishonest?

👀 No really, THOUSANDS 💰💰💰
•
💄That little colored lipstick base? It’s not decorative packaging, it’s the actual lipstick formula, filled into a separate cavity at the bottom of the bullet
•
🤔 Why place product there?
•
🧪 Because color matching plastic components to every lipstick shade means:
• Separate plastic color batches
• Separate machine setups
• Smaller production runs
= Higher costs per unit
•
⚙️ When you standardize your lipstick component (same black or neutral pack across all shades) you gain flexibility
•
📈 If your red lipstick is flying off shelves, and your pink one’s dragging? No problem - you’re not locked into unused color-matched inventory!
•
👉 Plus, showing the real formula through the base swatch gives customers a more accurate preview than colored plastic ever could
•
📦 Packaging isn’t just how your product looks on shelf. It’s how your brand scales profitably....or not 🤷‍♀️

🥲🥲🥲 I'm so bored I could cry...
•
🥱Minimalism has the beauty industry in a chokehold...and as such, beauty packaging has been pretty boring lately
•
☺️ But not all hope is lost!
•
💥Some brands are still out here being bold, innovative and actually launching exciting packaging
•
👉Here are a few of my favorite brands that are departing from the monopoly of minimalism
•
😍 First, we have Mienne which has the most beautiful bodycare packaging I've ever seen, (but I might be a bit biased🤭)
•
🫶 From their beautiful asymmetrical glass bottles to their
gorgeous hammered metal caps, their packaging feels more like miniature sculptures than components
•
❤️ Next, Tilt Beauty is prioritizing unique packaging accessibility and sustainability with their easy to use and grip mascara and lip balms...all of which come with refills!
•
✅️They really check all the boxes for me!
•
💄Next, we have Aora, a Mexican makeup brand that is plastic free and uses aluminum packaging
•
🤩Aluminum is not only infinitely recyclable, but also feels incredibly premium - especially their refillable eyeshadow palette!
•
💭🤔Let me know your thoughts- do you prefer brands launch minimalistic packaging or take bold risks with their packaging??

👉 Let me be clear...including Braille on packaging is a GREAT first step towards making packaging more accessible
•
👀 However, the inclusion of Braille, well intentioned as it may be, may not be as inclusive to the blind and visually impaired community as brands would've anticipated
•
🤔 Why!????
•
Well the harsh truth is only about 10% of the blind and visually impaired community actually reads Braille
•
💡Instead of Braille, tactile symbols (think raised shapes or textures, like thecyr.u.s.system ) could be far more effective, as they’re easier to recognize and don’t require Braille literacy to use
•
👥 Let this be a reminder that real inclusion starts with actually engaging the community you're trying to serve

😳🤯 Biggest orifice.. ever???
•
👀 I first saw this cleanser tube on skin.ken 's page, and couldn't help but notice the extremely oversized orifice
•
🤯 It’s so big, it’s not even on my standard orifice ruler
•
👉 Now, different formulas need different orifice sizes, with runny ones needing a smaller opening, and thicker ones need a bigger one
•
😠 And selecting the WRONG orifice size for a product formula can result in a lot of frustration
•
🤏 Too small and not enough product will dispense
•
❗️Too big and product will pour out with little to no tube pressure
•
🤭 However, without trying this cleanser I can already tell it's gonna be thick, creamy and full-bodied
•
🤔 Why???
•
🍦 Because this tube orifice is built like it’s serving soft-serve ice cream 😂😂😂

🇺🇸😬 America has a consumption addiction
•
📈 It’s no coincidence that disposable packaging, especially plastic, skyrocketed during the post-war consumption boom of the 50s
•
⛽️ In many way, packaging didn't just keep up with this culture shift...it fueled it!
•
🗑 The easier something is to throw away, the more we're encouraged to buy...
•
🔁 And culturally, we’re still stuck in that loop
•
🫠 Culture has evolved in so many ways since the 1950s (THANK GOD!) yet our obsession with more has only seems to intensify
•
💁‍♀️ If we want REAL sustainability, we don’t just need better packaging...we need a better relationship with consumption itself

🌎 Sustainability isn't just about saving trees or protecting coral reefs
•
🫂 At its core, true sustainability is about protecting people, especially those most vulnerable to environmental, political and economic instability.
•
And in the cosmetics industry, that means asking:
1️⃣ Who’s manufacturing your glass bottles?
2️⃣ Who's mining for bauxite (which is turned into aluminum)?
3️⃣ Who’s working in the fields harvesting your natural ingredients?
•
👉 Because the answer is most often marginalized communities in developing countries
•
‼️ These are people whose lives are already at risk from climate collapse, political upheaval and global exploitation
•
🛑 We can't keep talking about sustainability just in terms of packaging materials and carbon emissions...we need to talk about human rights

👀😂 We gotta talk about this packaging fail...
•
😳 This users lip balm squeezed out the WRONG END...
•
🤔 But why?
•
🤓 Well, it likely is due to poor tube crimping
•
👉Once tubes are filled with product, they are sealed and crimped shut
•
🔥 Manufacturers do this using heat, force or both to create an airtight seal that keeps the product inside and prevents leaks
•
😬 But in this case, it looks like the tube crimping was defective leading to the formula squeezing out when pressure was applied to the tube

🫠 Beauty is in it's copy + paste era...
•
🙄 The same launches, same packaging, same marketing campaigns...everything is starting to look the same
•
👀 Why? Well let's review the past 5 years...
•
📈The beauty industry has seen a worldwide pandemic, rising inflation, economic recession, political shifts and now an ongoing trade tariff situation
•
💰All of this has impacted how consumers and brands spend money...
•
💲With so much uncertainty right now, most brands are holding tight to their money
•
💸And the reality is, innovation takes time, energy and MONEY...lots of it
•
💁‍♀️So in uncertain economic times, what do brands do? They replicate. Because replication is easier, faster and cheaper than true innovation and originality
•
🫠We’re seeing it everywhere - copycat formulas, identical packaging, lookalike marketing campaigns that all blur together on your feed
•
😳It’s not just about avoiding risk - it’s about survival in an era where launching something truly new could potentially tank a brand’s bottom line
•
🤯But here’s the uncomfortable truth - playing it safe might keep a brand afloat in the short term, but it's also the reason why so many brands are slowly fading into irrelevance
•
