A lot happens in this world that’s hard to comprehend. Some things are nearly impossible to fathom or stomach, no matter how much we try.
In 2024, we made an effort, but society couldn’t care less. 
So, in 2025, I’ve decided to explore all things fermented—focusing on strengthening my gut bacteria instead.

Probably many of you do not know I run a small business where we make Kantha and Batik sarees and curate hnadlooms from different weaving clusters from Bengal and beyond.

This Handloom day I thought of sharing this video which I would love to call, 'a weave called Jamdani'.
.
For the uninitiated, If you consider weaving as an art form then Jamdani is the finest of them all. It requires skill, precision, dexterity, aesthetic sense and patience to create such delicate fabric with even intricate yet elaborate designs. Each design is created directly on the loom using a fine needle, it is embedded into the fabric by weaving denser threads into fine warp threads following a discontinuous weft technique. Its a time consuming and labour intensive process for which a weaver often can produce only a quarter to one inch of fabric in a day. Sometimes a very elaborate design takes months that are unique and a  symbol of identity and dignity in itself. For which UNESCO recognised this traditional craft as intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2013.

Shot this small video during one of my sourcing trip to a remote village in Burdwan district. The master weaver was training his 18 years old son which you can see at the end of the video. Hopefully this craft will pass the test of time. As a small business owner I believe in ethical sourcing and would always be proud of this cultural heritage of ours.

When life gives you lemon, make lemon pickle...

North India style savoury nimbu ka achaar made with the lemons (am guessing Gonra lebu / গোঁড়া লেবু since they do not know the name of this species) from my In law’s . Also added some Bhut Jolokia that was on the verge of spoiling.

Recipe: cut lemon in desired size. Add a few green chilies to it. Mix quite some salt and turmeric . Mix and keep covered for a day. Next day mix little more salt and keep covered for 12 hrs.
Dry roast fenugreek (methi), ajwain (carom seeds), nigella seeds (kalojire) and mustard . Mustard should be little more than the others. Take out and make a grainy powder. Toast some fennel seeds and crush them lightly. 
Mix everything together. Adjust taste.
Since I added bhut jolokia I did not add any chili powder. But am partial to the piring of lemon to green chilies than powdered dried variety.
Now heat some mustard oil till smoking. Switch off the flame,  and let it cool down for a minute. Add sone hing to the oil and then pour it on the lemon mix.
Mix well, pour in a bottle and sun it for 10-12 days or more.

Like women and wine this also gets better with age.

Managing to post after a long time. Being Peri menopausal, am finding life a little tiring most days and getting overwhelmed with smallest of hardles. Among all these I could hardly find time to sit and post. 
But cooking and caring for family is constant and once you learn to prioritise health you make better choices with ingredients and cooking methods. 
With risk of diabetes running in the family we are trying to explore more whole grains (other than the staple rice and wheat for our daily diet. 
Here is a bowl of whole grain Barley khichri (overnight soaked barley and red lentil) with only a tea spoon of kitchen king masala (made at home). Just a cup of it topped with a boiled egg, a spoonfull of moringa and curry leaf podi ( recipe by none other than sangeetaamkhanna ) and some homemade ghee. The purple cabbage and tofu stir fry was part of children's lunch box. The leftover went up too on the bowl adding colour and making it look like a khichri Buddha bowl 🙂.
This and a little portion of fruit afterwards keep us full till lunch time.

If cooking grounds me . Baking relieves me all stress but because of time constraint have alnost stopped baking. 
Last week when could not find any good Baguette style bread on any delivery app, I decided to bake one. Three of These were baked from scratch under a little more than two hours. 

Was really happy with the result.  It was slightly crusty on the out and soft in the inside. The crumb was perfect to hold shape and soak the flavoured butter and cheese.

এই কদিন আগে অব্দিও রান্নাঘর ছিল কেবল মেয়েমানুষের জায়গা। কালী ঝুলি মাখা স্যাঁতস্যাঁতে এক ঘর, যেখানে মেয়েমানুষে মুখ বুজে দুবেলা উনুন ঠেলবে আর ভাতের থাল সাজিয়ে দেবে আপামর সংসারের সামনে। ইচ্ছেয় হোক বা অনিচ্ছেয়, মায়ের জাত মেয়েমানুষে সে কাজও করেছে ভালোবেসেই । আসলে দায়িত্বের শিকলে বেঁধে তাদের ইচ্ছের স্বীকৃতি সমাজ সহজে দেয়নি। তাই  নিজের মনখানা তোরঙ্গে তুলে ওই আলো-আঁধারি মাখা হেঁশেলেই তারা গড়ে তুলেছে এক আশ্চর্য শিক্ষার জগৎ, যেখানে মানুষের স্মৃতি আর স্বাদে মিশে গেছে  ইতিহাস, ভূগোল আর বিজ্ঞানের অশেষ জ্ঞান। শিখতে জানলে দেখবে, আজকের এই সুপার ফুড বলো অথবা পশ্চিমের  স্লো ফুড মুভমেন্ট, নতুন বলে যা কিছু তোমরা দাগিয়ে দিতে চাও - তার সবকিছুর সূত্রটুকু লুকিয়ে আছে আমাদের মা ঠাকুমাদের অতি পূরাতন এই  হেঁশেলঘরে। ...

অনেকদিন পরে আনন্দবাজারের পাতায় ছোট্টো একটা লেখা আর কিছু আঞ্চলিক রেসিপি। সময় করে পড়ে দেখলে  মতামতের অপেক্ষায় রইলাম .
সকলে আমার নববর্ষের শুভেচ্ছা জানবেন।

My very quiet and introvert boy turned 15 yesterday and like every year I had plans to make him his favourite meals. But somehow work kept me so busy that apart from a mandatory luchi, alur torkari, payes breakfast I could not make anything else. 
Thus this happened today. A full blown Japanese meal for this anime crazy, not so little boy of mine

Mornings here in Santiniketan are dotted with loud screams of hawkers hawking their wares on Bicycles or van rikshaw. Ranging from fish to daily use items like plastic baskets, doormats and what nots they also bring in seasonal items like fresh wild honey, foraged wild greens etc. But this time I heard these two boys selling tender neem leaves. Loved the way they called out in a somewhat musical way and we had been buying from them daily. 

Spring in Bengal is known as ‘basanta’ which also is the name for ‘chicken pox’ that spreads wildly during this time. This transitional time tends to weaken our body and to fortify our immunity, Bengali tradition stipulated certain ritualistic and relugious observations. Eating bitter is said to purify one’s blood hence almost each meal in this ritu starts with something bitter like shukto or this very seasonal tender neem leaf bhaja (/ fried )with eggplant known as neem begun. 
The recipe is somewhere in my blog archive if you could locate.
The lady in this reel is my youngest sister in law who happily posted with our daily bunch of these bitter greens and we both agreed that we finally found our kinda bouquet.

Nothing absolutely nothing brings me peace than being at my childhood home in Santiniketan. 
The garden that my mother created and now tended by my brother is an absolute joy. Its like a treasure trove for me to keep exploring. He grows all sorts of plants and almost all seasonal veggies. 
Life here is slow and closer to nature. 
I had to leave this land long back and now am just counting days to return...
Hopefully soon
