📍Matsue Castle 🗾 Shimane Prefecture I’m a massive fan of Japanese castles, and of all the castles in Japan the 12 original castles, each for their own individual reasons, are my favourite. There are 12 original castles in Japan, meaning their main towers (tenshu) were built before the Edo period (1603-1868) and have remained largely intact to this day. These castles are known as “genson-tenshu” (existing castles). didn’t think I’ll be able to make it all the way to Shimane prefecture to see the castle myself, but I’m so glad I have this four-day weekend to venture all the way down to Shimane and back! Finally go to attend the Sanja Matsuri in Asakusa! Probably one of the most insane festivals. In Oita prefecture, there’s a dedicated 64-year-old man who operates a ramen yatai stall purely for the love of the game. He sacrifices precious sleep, resting for just around 3 hours, to ensure his stall is ready and open for his loyal customers. He finds immense joy in serving his signature ramen to his regular patrons, fostering a sense of community and connection. Remarkably, he lives without a cellphone, fully immersing himself in his work. The Yatai is called Neko Ramen as when it first opened there were a bunch of stray cats that would hang around the stall (10/10 if you ask me) which led to the locals and students who visited the stall naming it as such. 📍Shiga Prefecture I’ve been to almost all of the prefectures in Japan so I plan to spend this year ticking off the last seven prefectures and I started with Shiga! I got to visit Kumamoto and see the ONE PIECE Kumamoto Revival Project! This project in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan was started by Eiichiro Oda himself! For those that dont know Oda is the creator of One Piece! Eiichiro Oda donated ¥800,000,000 (around 5,944,600 USD) to help reconstruct his home city of Kumamoto, Japan after it was struck by two earthquakes. Eiichiro Oda wrote supportive messages, and drew art for local products. After rebuilding Kumamoto, the governor Ikuo Kabashima announced that they would build statues of the Straw Hat Pirates to thank Eiichiro Oda for his help. The statue construction phase is known as Straw Hat Pirates “Hino Country” Reconstruction Arc (麦わらの一味 「ヒノ国」復興編, Mugiwara no Ichimi “Hino kuni” Fukkō-hen). The name refers to the ancient Hi Province of Japan, which was located within the present-day Kumamoto Prefecture; It is also likely intended to reference “Wano Country”. 2024 -> 2025? It’s been a busier year that I expected. The realisation has hit me that I never actually did a big dump of the photos I had taken during my first time ever at any Disneyland! I got the chance to travel to Iwate prefecture, Kamaishi City! This is one of those cities where if you wanna really take advantage of all of the countryside that Japan has to offer this is the place to go! From beautiful mountainous hiking routes to adventurous marine time aqua activities this city truly does have it all. As a man who doesn’t really trust the sea, surprisingly found kayaking to be the most enjoyable thing I did during this two day adventure! 🗡️ This was basically my first real samurai experience and I have to say it was probably the best one I’ve seen. Yes this what is the first time I actually got to do the experience start to finish but I’ve seen enough of these workshops while working to know that this one was something special. The sensei took his time with each student and had a genuine passion and skill for the craft! He could watch you swing the sword and instantly know what small changes he needed you to make in order for you to be able to cut the tatami. Spent some time in the UK for a wedding and to see family and friends! Generally super excited for this year’s Awa Odori in Koenji! Last years was crazy, I went by myself just to explore a little and was blown away! Went to the Ghibli museum after more than 4 years living in the area. Turns out living in the area gives your priority booking which was awesome considering I booked tickets kind of last minute. You’re not allowed to take photos inside the museum, I think that’s something everyone knows already, but just a heads up for people who are going in the future!
