Meet MDM 2025 artist deja.darbonne and a little bit about her inspiration behind new upcoming work: “On the Other Side of Everything” by Calida Rawles grabbed my attention with its hyper realistic painting of a man submerging into water. The scale of the piece at the Pérez Art Museum was incredibly grand—it immediately drew me in. The way Calida captured the light reflecting off the water, and the body that seemed to float within it, brought a sense of calm and surrender. A look into gio_castellon inspiration and process: “Gyula Kosice’s “Hydrospatial City” was a quarter century long project that culminated in a utopian, outer space-architectural style floating city future for the world. I felt connected to his work from the moment I walked into his exhibit. Kosice was a pioneer, being one of the first to experiment with plastic sculptures and water. Often referred to as a theorist, I see more of a poetic futurist; creating works that many would consider ahead of his time. Meet Deja, one of our 2025 MDM artists in collaboration with youngarts Deja Darbonne is a Miami-based performing artist, choreographer, and movement teacher blending classical tradition with contemporary expression. She began dancing at her mother’s studio, Darbonne Academy of the Arts, and later trained in competitive and commercial dance in Suisun City, CA. A Miami Dade College Dance Award recipient, she earned her BFA from New World School of the Arts in 2017. Deja has danced with Cuban Classical Ballet of Miami, Syncopate Collective, Zest Collective, Ballet Hispanico II and more. Meet Giovanni, our 2025 MDM Artist partnering with the_moss_center Giovanni Castellon is from Miami, Florida, where he studied at New World School of the Arts High School and Miami Dance Collective. He continued his studies at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts as a Kenan Excellence Scholar, earning a BFA in Contemporary Dance with a minor in Arts Entrepreneurship. He has presented work at Peridance Presents, the SoloDuo Dance Festival, and the Dumbo Dance Festival. Meet Luiza, one of our artists who is partnering with liveartsmiami for MDM’s 2025 Season. Luiza Lamoglia is a multimedia dance artist based in Miami, Florida. She earned her B.F.A. in Dance Performance from The State University of New York at Purchase College. Luiza has performed works choreographed by renowned artists including Beth Gill, Michael Cole, and Rosalind Newman. Her own dance practice explores improvisation, theatrics, and voice. Luiza and her close friend/collaborator, Mary Rogers, have co-created and performed works for platforms such as MOMENTA NYC, Green Space’s “Fertile Ground,” and Emerging Artists Theater’s “New Work Series.” Luiza is currently a member of Miami’s Syncopate Collective. AMD had a productive, jam packed dance + technology residency for ‘a world gone FABULOUS’ in the stunning Forbes Center in March at James Madison University (JMU) with project Creative Technologist and JMU faculty, Tara Burns.
