From sunrise to sunset, I never get enough of this place! Who needs the Beehive 🐝 when you have this!?! I was considering the Beehive as my big Maine hike this year but honestly not ready for it…wanted to enjoy it and not be stressed the entire time, particularly with the packed trails everyone is reporting this year. If this sounds familiar, I have an alternative for you… 📍Great Head Trail ~ my new Acadia favorite! ✔️ easy to moderate - or as hard as you choose to make it (perfect with kids & a dog) ✔️coastal views for the majority of the hike 🌊 ✔️loads of scenic places to picnic 🧺 ✔️seal watching 🦭 ✔️Sand Beach to start or finish (note: dogs not allowed in summer) ✔️very few people - we went at our own pace and loved it! ⏰ 2 hours ~ started at 10 and done by 12 Then after Great Head Trail… ✔️quick stop at Thunder Hole 💦 ✔️Jordan Pond for popovers & prosecco 🥂 ✔️ a stroll along Jordan Pond - a must! Jordan Pond is VERY busy this time of year so parking is challenging. We waited about 10-15 before finally getting a spot. Worth the wait!! Finally made it to Monhegan Island, Maine!!🛥️ 🦭 Monhegan Island is located 10 miles off the coast of Maine, about an hours ferry ride, and offers a day trip experience unlike any other… Save for your Maine bucket list! 📍Stop at Marshall Point Lighthouse before boarding the Monhegan Boat Line ferry in Port Clyde 📍Scan for seals, jellyfish, porpoise & even sunfish on the way to the island 🦭 📍Grab salty caramel blondies & Monhegan Island coffee at Barnacles Cafe - soooooooo good ☕️ 📍Take Whitehead Trail #7 to Monhegan Museum & Lighthouse 📍Continue on Cliff Trail #1 along the southeast side of the island for cliffside ocean views & artists working on their next masterpiece 📍Explore the shipwreck near Lobster Cove 🦞 📍Reward yourself at monheganbrewing with berry seltzer & the freshest clams evah! 🍻 📍Swim, eat & take in the island vibes at Fish Beach 🐠 📍Walk Main St shops & art galleries 🎨 📍Take in final views of this picturesque Maine town before boarding the ferry again A few important things to know before you go: 1. Most establishments take cards but bring cash too! 2. Buy a Monhegan Island Trail Map for $1 to plan your hike while on the ferry over (also get tips from the ferry crew monheganboat - they were fantastic!!) 3. This itinerary is roughly 4 miles & a moderate hike with narrow areas for ascending/descending rocks 🪨 4. Stay on the trail - there is poison ivy everywhere ☠️ 5. If you’re up for it & without kids, visitors enjoy a bit of skinny dipping at Gull Cove 😳🌊 6. Bring plenty of water on a hot summer day! We ran out along Norton’s Ledge and listened to a fair amount of complaining until we got to Monhegan Brewing 7. Book ferry tickets at least a few days in advance! They sell out fast in summer. This trip took the 10:30 over and 4:30 return. 8. Easier hike than Mt Kineo in Moosehead (& there were no horse flies!! 🙌🏻) but definitely challenging! Anyone else drink Yellowtail at dawn?!?! Yah, not typically me either but this sunrise was different. This one👆🏻was for my dad, and I have no doubt my mom was chuckling about it too. My first trip to St Martin was 13 years ago. My parents invited us and showed us around the island like locals would. Dutch on one side, French on the other - it was the closest thing to Europe my mom ever experienced. And she loved it. And so it only made sense to go back. Finally made it to Moosehead Lake!! Road to Hana ~ “it’s not the destination, but the journey” Sooo true, but how do you do it in 10-12 hours??? It took us 13 hrs round trip from Kaanapali, including a 1 hour stop paiafishmarket for dinner. 🐠 🍽️ We left the hotel by 7:15 and back at 8:15, and that’s not including all the must-see stops. We skipped all the gardens & arboretum, Waikamoi Nature Trail, lookout spots, & had to turn around before reaching the 7 Sacred Pools. 💦 Even our Gypsy Guide app (MUST HAVE since there there’s 0 cell service beyond Ho’okipa Beach) said we had plenty of time to see all the things but we totally ran out of time. We didn’t linger at any one place for long ~ especially since it was raining. This is what 12 hours covered on the Road to Hana: 📍Ho’okipa Beach 📍jawscountrystore for Hana Tonic & Jaws tees 🌊 📍Twin Falls 💦 📍Honomanu Bay 📍Keana Peninsula for auntysandys banana bread 📍3 Bears (a slow drive by)💦 📍Coconut Glen’s ice cream 🍨 📍Nahiku Market for hanapizzacompany 📍Hana Lava Tube 📍Wai’anapanapa State Park (my fav!! 🖤) 📍Koki Beach Park for Huli Huli Chicken 📍Wailua Falls 💦 How do you cover the above, with the 7 Sacred Pools or Pipiwai Trail in less than 12 hours?
