I took a little 6 week hiatus from Insta and I have to say, it was really nice. Particularly to break the habit of reaching for the app whenever I had a few minutes to spare, or just needed a break from whatever I was doing. Since I’ve often heard that to break a habit you need to replace it with something, I decided to take the app off my phone. I replaced my scrolling time with using the Bible app and reading for a few minutes at a time. Needless to say, it was a very positive experience taking a break from social media and I think I will be looking at it/using it differently from here on out. Is it bad that Seville was my favorite part of our month-long trip to Spain, Bali, and Singapore? Even though I’ve been to Seville many times, it remains one of my favorite cities in Europe. Bali, on the other hand, is a one-and-done for us. It wasn’t our favorite and I don’t think it’s worth the travel time to get there for Americans. #florence in December exceeded expectations. I haven’t experienced Florence this empty in years and years. The weekends were crowded (a lot of Italians and Europeans coming to Florence for Christmas shopping), but the weekdays were empty. Weather had been great! It’s sprinkled a few times, but primarily a mix of sunny days and cloudy with temps in the 40s and 50s. After spending a week at Lake Como, I’m VERY glad with our decision to base ourselves in Bellagio. When we return, we will either choose Bellagio again or go for Varenna. These were the most picturesque towns in the most picturesque area of Lake Como. The mid-lake region is where you want to be for stunning views. The 3 neighboring towns (Varenna, Menagio, Bellagio) were also big enough that there were plenty of restaurants, cafes, and hikes to keep us busy. It’s an expensive region, but if you do some digging you can find some great deals. We stayed at Seta Boutique Hotel for €160 night (including a wonderful breakfast each morning). It was a gamble b/c there were only 15 reviews when I booked it (it’s new) and it’s not on any booking engine, but it was a gem. Happy New Year from the Friemel’s! This has been one memorable Christmas trip 🎅🏻 I’ve gotten my fill of Christmas markets in Germany (Nuremberg, Bamberg, Regensburg, Rothenberg, and Heidelberg). I explored the famous “capital of Christmas” in Strasbourg, France (not my favorite city). Jake joined me in one of our favorite places ever…Colmar. We spent several nights and afternoons with locals we met back in 2019 and made new friends from Alicante, Spain as well. Charleston seems to get better and better with each return trip. Our stay at hotelemeline was fantastic (I also stayed here for my girls trip to Charleston), the food scene remains one of our favorites in the US (the Grocery and Verns is a top pick for dinner, Harken for coffee and treats), the craft cocktail bar scene is 👌, and if you love a good rooftop you won’t be short of options.
