WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS AFTER YOU SIGN WITH AN AGENCY EXPECTATIONS vs REALITY EXPECTATIONS (what people think): • Instant jobs and big campaigns. • Agents handle everything while you “just show up.” • No more investing in photos — your book is “done.” • Daily glam teams, perfect skin/body, no stress. • Travel all the time, and money rolling in from day one. REALITY (what actually happens): • You probably won’t get your first job right away. • Many castings/self-tapes. Many “no’s.” That’s normal. • You’ll keep building and regularly renewing your book: tests, polas, digitals. Some shoots the agency sets up, some you initiate, some paid by you, some barter. • You will put a lot of effort into working on yourself: your body, your skin, your mindset, your energy, your posing as well as acting skills. • First jobs are often e-comm/retail—great for learning, not always “glam.” • “Options” don’t equal bookings. Cancellations happen. • Payments can be slow (30–90 days). Learn invoices, usage, buyouts, rights. • There are expenses: transport, grooming, digitals, test shoots, classes. • Your IG matters — clients look. You’ll have to manage your socials like a mini-brand. • Seasonality is real. Some months are hot, some are quiet. • Feedback can sting. Or sometimes there is no feedback at all. I’VE BEEN WORKING WITH MODELS FOR 2.5 YEARS, HERE IS WHAT I’VE LEARNED… 1. Presence beats perfection The models who book aren’t “the prettiest” — they’re the most present. Open, connected, trusting. Energy first — angles later. 2. Be a marketable character, not a mannequin The industry buys ideas. Know your lane (clean commercial? edgy fashion?) and play it on purpose. 3. Snaps win the first battle Daylight polas + studio polas + a short audition video open more doors than a thousand over-edited tests. Clarity > aesthetics. 4. A tight book beats a big one 10-15 strong, on-brand looks beat 100 random images. Range is good; chaos is not. 5. “No” is data Rejection isn’t a verdict—it’s feedback on timing, market, materials.
